Baltimore Ravens – 2021 Top Plays Of The Year

It is time that we run through the season and take a look at the best plays of our Baltimore Ravens under Coach Mehoy.
These plays do not have to be flashy to make the cut. We are looking at momentum swinging, season defining, and high-stake clutch plays.

Some plays have videos, some plays have pictures, some have both.

Week 5- Colts

While this wasn’t the prettiest game put on by our Baltimore Ravens, it still showed some sort of confidence in our QB and TE. On a corner route approaching the redzone, TE Mark Andrews executes a double move that ties up not 1, but 2 defenders for an open TD. This would eventually be the only TD Baltimore would score in the game… but not too bad for Coach Mehoy’s first game in the PML.

Week 6- Chargers

Down 21-3 at halftime, Coach Mehoy’s Ravens were looking to throw in the towel on the season. Shut down in every aspect, it took a series of bad playcalls from the Chargers HC and a big step up from our defense to bring ourselves back in. On the final play of the game, CB Marcus Peters gets mossed by Jalen Guyton. Guyton then runs for 40 yards and SS Chuck Clark swoops in to save the day. Guyton gets tackled in bounds and the clock runs out before the Chargers can run the hurry-up. Coach Mehoy’s first win as Baltimore’s HC is in the books.

Week 7- Bengals

Baltimore’s first divisional matchup sure was a good one. Beating their rivals 34-0, Coach Mehoy was attempting to make a statement. Another person that was looking to make a statement was Rashod Bateman. Turning on the jets, he burnt all-pro Jesse Bates III and the CB guarding him on a streak route. Safety Bates III was apparently not expecting the rookie to be so fast with his height. Once the catch was secured, the rookie kept the speed going into the endzone for his first career catch and first career touchdown- in the same play!

Week 9- Vikings

After the blowout win led by Lamar in the previous week, it was time to let the guys on the ground get some love. Our RB room was quite disheveled at the time with JK Dobbins making an early exit on the season. We needed someone to step up big this season and all eyes looked to one man. 2nd stringer Gus Edwards came up big this season, sparking off his time as a starter with a beastly run. Carrying five defenders on his back, Edwards chugged forward for 2 more yards and fell into the endzone. This play set the tone of the game and the Ravens never looked back, winning in a dominant fashion.

Week 10- Dolphins

Baltimore was now showing they could compete in the PML. Facing off against a competitive Dolphins team in a game of the week, Baltimore’s last two games were looking like a fluke. Much like how they started vs the Chargers, Baltimore found themselves down 21 points at halftime- again. Once again, Coach Mehoy had to switch up his defense and it paid off. Playcall mistakes and defensive adjustments allowed Baltimore to finally close the gap in the 4th quarter. On the Dolphins’ 40 yard line, Lamar Jackson dropped back and saw Marquise Brown pull off a move that left 3 Dolphins defenders staring at their feet. Upon seeing this, he launched a bullet pass in the back of the endzone and Brown secured it with both feet down- giving Baltimore the lead and leaving the league speechless.

Week 11- Bears

Marquise Brown is a man coverage destroyer. Someone with his agility and speed is feared by most, if not all DBs throughout the league. The Bears did not get the memo. Running man coverage with players like Lamar Jackson and Marquise Brown is picking your poison- get burned on the ground? Or through the air? With 40 seconds left in the half, Coach Mehoy elected to use the air. Brown ran a fake-flat-streak route against the Bears’ DB. The DB bit on the flat, and the rest is history. Brown turned up field when the DB bit and never looked back, leaving him in the dust and catching a wide open ball and scoring.

Week 12- Browns

Richard Sherman is proving to be a great free agent addition to the Baltimore defense. A veteran presence in the secondary is something that can help support the younger players in defending. However, it is when a veteran shows their experience to make a huge play that you realize how important they really are. Cleveland is down 10 with a few minutes left in the game. On the 15 yard line, a deep corner route is ran by speedster Anthony Schwartz. Sherman is originally assigned to the underneath route, but reads Mayfield’s eyes and attacks the corner route. Using his 6’3″ height, Sherman reaches up and grabs the interception, sealing the game and leaving Baltimore 2-0 against their division rival.

Week 13- Steelers

Baltimore had some players step up in a great way this season. One of those players is the leader of our defense- Patrick Queen. Queen led the AFC MLB group in interceptions, forced fumbles, and solo tackles(Still didn’t make the pro bowl). One person that certainly recognizes the greatness in front of them is Ben Roethlisberger. On a phenomenal scramble play conducted by Big Ben, he was approaching the first down marker and had 1 person to beat- Patrick Queen. Queen put all the frustrations of this season into this one hit, and Roethlisberger most definitely felt it. Upon taking the hit, the ball then launched into the air and fell into a Baltimore player’s hands, ending their already atrocious drive.

Week 14- Browns

Marquise Brown had a series of amazing plays in the 2021 season. One of the most embarrassment-inducing plays was the one that occurred against the Browns in Week 14. After receiving a 6 yard pass from Lamar, Brown was met by 3 Browns defenders. Instead of taking the ball out of bounds to prevent a hit, Brown zigged and zagged between the 3 defenders, leaving them in the dust. By the time they realized what happened, Brown was 35 yards downfield and they were on the turf putting their cleats back on.

Week 15- Packers

Marquise Brown is a speed demon – everyone knows this. What the GB packers didn’t know is that the man can run a crisp route as well. Running a designed wheel route, Brown fell to the flat and drew the defender up towards the line of scrimmage. Upon seeing this, the Packers DB jumped the route in anticipation for the ball to be thrown. Before the DB even recognized that he made a detrimental mistake with no help overtop, Brown was already 25 yards down field and snagging the ball with 1 hand.

Week 16- Bengals

Marlon Humphrey is one of the best man CB in the league. He showed why on this play. On a play where he is giving cushion to Tyler Boyd, a CB’s worst nightmare occurred- a slant. Boyd had Humphrey beat for approximately .03 seconds, and even that amount of time is generous. Burrow was a bit too late on the throw and Humphrey acrobatically reached around Boyd and snagged the pick. After securing the ball, Humphrey threw a juke move on a Bengal player that would leave Barry Sanders jealous. Burrow eventually lost twice on this play- throwing the pick and losing his pants on the field on Marlon’s interception return for a TD.

Week 17- Rams

Rookie Rashod Bateman made the cut twice on our list. Both plays are showing off his great speed at his size. In this play, he was being pressed, and he won right off the first step. Lamar dropped back and had plenty of time to analyze the field. His original read on the crossing route was covered, but the last thing he expected was WR Rashod Bateman 3 yards ahead of his defender. Lamar launched a pass and Bateman caught it nice and easy on the boundary of the endzone. For the rest of the game, Rashod Bateman had a safety overtop.

Week 18- Steelers

There isn’t a better way to close off the season than by completely dismantling a division rival. Doing it singlehandedly is a whole other level of greatness. Marlon Humphrey was a man on a mission in this season-closing divisional game. Not only did he leave the field with 4 interceptions, he had one of the longest interception returns of the season on an incredible jump ball. A crossing route to rookie TE Pat Freiermuth was being stalked by Humphrey. Once the ball was in the air, Humphrey broke on it and showed his vertical, out-jumping a 6’5″ TE and returning the interception for 99 yards…. untouched.

Wildcard Round

For Coach Mehoy’s first playoff game in the PML, he faced off against Derrick Henry and the Tennessee Titans. It was quite a nail-biter in the snowy weather of Baltimore. Being at home, the crowd was wild throughout the entire game. Neck and neck, neither team could gain a large enough lead to feel comfortable. One TD that stood out from the rest, was the incredible play-action fake ran by Lamar that led to a wide open Josh Oliver in the endzone. Lamar was in goal-line formation after just being stuffed on a QB sneak. The defense had a look in their eyes that said running the ball was not going to work, so Lamar smartly audibled into a play-action. Once the ball was snapped, the play-action occurred and Jackson began to roll out. What was in front of him was 2 wide open Ravens, he just had to pick. Josh Oliver was the lucky target and caught the uncontested ball for a go-ahead TD.
