Giants Offensive Roster Review

The Giants offense this season was a mixed bag of tricks. They ranked top ten in passing yards per game, and in the bottom twenty for the rest of their offense. The run offense was non-existent, coming in next to last place in the league. The decision to run a passing offense as opposed to a run offense was a hindrance this season. This choice led to a lot of passing touchdowns, and yardage, however, interceptions as well.  In this article we will take a look at each position and talk about how they did this season.

Daniel Jones was called upon this season in order to take the reins of this offense and make it his own. He had a plethora of skill players to work with, however, his offensive line was one of the worst in the league. Jones was able to throw for over 5000 yards and  over 40 touchdowns. This is a great accomplishment for a young player, however, this came with a major flaw. Jones threw for 51 interceptions which was good for most in the league. His interceptions were a major hindrance for the team and often put the defense in compromising situations that they weren’t able to overcome. On seven different occasions Jones lost the game in the fourth quarter by throwing an interception. Jones has tremendous upside, however, his interceptions this season will prevent him from progressing any further. Had he thrown about 10 less interceptions, we could be having a different conversation as to the Giants futute with Jones.

To say the Giants running game was a disappointment would be the understatement of the century. Barkley was underutilized this season as a whole. He should be a player that the offense goes through, however, he was used sparingly most games in the run game. The issues this season with Barkley were his fumbles, which happened early in games thus disrupting the flow of the run game. After a fumble the offense would lean from the run game instead of doubling down and giving Barkley his shot. When he was given the ball he ran well, averaging over 4 yards per carry. Rumors are that Coach Burn is putting Barkely on the trade block in the off season, however, unless he got a trade he couldn’t refuse it wouldn’t be smart to trade this superstar back. I can bet if he isn’t traded, Barkley will be back and better than ever next season.

Five players with over 50 catches, along with three players with over 1000 yards receiving is an impressive feat for any offense. Slayton, Golladay, and Toney all had great seasons and were all  rewarded with a Pro Bowl spot. Each receiver in their own light could be a featured receiver on another team and each one took over games at different points in the season. Slayton had the best season of the three amazing  over 1500 yards receiving and was second in the voting for best receiver in the NFC. He should be awarded with a superstar development trait for his efforts.

One complaint about the Giants receivers as a whole was their amount of drops. The Giants lead the league in players with over 10 drops this season. Most of these drops have come at important parts in each game. For the amount of statistics that each put up, the drops are a huge blemish when looking at them compared to some of the other big name receivers in the league. Slayton and Toney will be the starting pair for next season, so each will need to work on their catching in the offseason as drops like this season will cost them their starting spot if it continues.

Barkley wasn’t used that much in the run game, but his usage out of the backfield catching the ball was always in the game plan. He ended the year with the most catches on the team. The Giants know that getting him the ball in space, especially versus a linebacker is key. Next season he will look to reach the 1000 yard mark for both rushing and receiving.

The Giants offense as a whole played very well. They were able to put up a lot of points in many games this season. As previously mentioned their turnovers were killer in most games and was their major reason for losing. If they are able to curb the turnovers while maintaining the same production, this team could be one of the best offensive teams next season.
