AFC 2022 Draft Grades – In Depth | Presented by Midnight Maddeness

AFC NORTH

Baltimore Ravens

A+

The Ravens hit on a lot of marks in this draft. Being one of the teams that drafted the most top tier players in the draft, they certainly have a great front office. Not only did they only miss the mark on 2 of their picks, they also stole Nick Herbig out of the mid 2nd round. Herbig ended up being one of the top skilled players in the draft, only being tied with #1 overall pick Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Cincinnati Bengals

B-

The Bengals had quite a decent draft this season. With various press outlets discussing the need to bolster his front 7 on defense, Coach Kingke listened and came out with one of the top DL in the draft. Nakobe Dean was also a good selection in the 2nd round. However, the rest of his draft fizzles out as it got closer to conclusion.

Cleveland Browns

B+

The Browns looked to recover from their Baker Mayfield trade by seeking a franchise QB at #2. Desmond Ridder was certainly a surprise to many, especially with Malik Willis still available. Coach HD addressed many positions across the draft and filled them with decent players. It will be exciting to see Ridder in the regular season.

Pittsburgh Steelers

B-

The Steelers made a few moves that had the league buzzing up to the draft. With two picks in the top 15, Steelers fans were really looking to see some team changing prospects on their way to Pittsburgh. Instead, the Steelers whiffed on the #4 overall pick with Jordan Davis and again on #13 with Ahmad Gardner. Malik Willis, Demarvin Leal, Charles Booth….. The list goes on.

AFC SOUTH

Houston Texans

A

The Texans have a great front office. Coach Cook is historically known to turn players with low expectations into all-pro players. This might be his best one to date. He selected 6 top tier players which is game changing for the Texans roster because they were lacking in quite a few areas and they filled a lot of them throughout this draft. Getting Howell in the 2nd round might be one of the best steals in this year’s draft.

Indianapolis Colts

B-

The Colts had a lot of speculation surrounding them for being a Super Bowl Championship team. However, all questions got answered when coach Mole selected Carson Strong. Not only did they get Strong, but they also selected a speedy QB by the name of D’Eriq King in the 4th round. In the 7th round they also got a gem of a player in young LT Sean Ryhan. So overall a pretty good draft for the Colts.

Jacksonville Jaguars

C

The Jaguars might have fixed their tight end issue with 1st round pick Jahleel Billingsley. Unfortunately, when an organization has 10 picks and only 1 seems to be NFL ready, this one leans more towards being a draft to forget.

Tennessee Titans

C

The Titans’ draft was underwhelming. The main key factors for that is he only had 4 picks and none of the picks were home run picks in the eyes of the league. Josh Jobe has potential to be a nice physical CB in the future, but the rest of the Titan’s picks might just be roster fillers or even practice squad members.

AFC EAST

Buffalo Bills

F

The Bills have left us speechless. There isn’t much to talk about on this one. Their best selection may not even make the practice squad on a college team. Instead of drafting a young safety to take over for regressing Hyde or Poyer, they went WR… and didn’t get a good one either. Not much else to say. They hold one of the two “F” grades from the PML draft rankings.

Miami Dolphins

C+

The Dolphins bolstered up an already decent LB core with their first pick. Could they have gone a different route and improved on their OL or a younger, game-ready safety? Yes. Either way, the Dolphins are a young and developing team so they couldn’t have gone too wrong with their selections.

New England Patriots

D

The Patriots made a great pick at 15 for top DT Demarvin Leal. However, this was the last position that they needed to improve on. With an already dominant d-line, Leal may be a little overkill compared to what they should’ve improved on… like WR.

New York Jets

B+

The Jets made more trades before the draft than some franchises have in 10 years. Once the negotiations were concluded, Coach Arod had 5 selections to his name, 2 of them being within the top 6. Both selections are top tier players in their respective positions in the defensive backfield. However, their final picks of the draft did not do well with addressing their needs in the front 7- this may be seen for the 2nd year in a row.

AFC WEST

Denver Broncos

D+

The Broncos seemed to have one thing on their mind: 40 yard dash times. If a guy had speed, they were being selected by the Broncos with top priority. Coach Kmac looked to address a slow LB core and backfield in the draft, and boy did he come through. While speed is a factor in the PML, how much better will it make the already suspect Broncos defense?

Kansas City Chiefs

C

The Chiefs entered the 2022 draft under new management. Coach DK has not been a part of a PML draft before and it certainly showed. With their first selection, they drafted a SS. For a team with Tyrann Matheiu and Juan Thornhill in their primes, we are unsure why this selection was made. Maybe a LB or supporting pass rusher would’ve been a better choice. Coach DK has made some interesting moves this offseason, and more questions have been popping up since this draft.

Las Vegas Raiders

C+

The Raiders had two glaring issues that needed to be addressed in this draft; Offensive linemen and cornerbacks. With Casey Hayward on a steep decline, it would’ve been assumed that the Raiders would seek a replacement. While not having a first round selection may have swayed Coach Dlloyd in a different direction, not obtaining any DBs may come to hurt him when Hayward retires.

 Los Angeles Chargers

A

The Chargers had an underrated draft this year. They shined in quality over quantity. Prioritizing their need for interior linemen, they snagged 2 top-tier guards. Along with those picks, they also obtained an athletic machine in Demarvion Overshown.
