A strong interior defensive line can make any defense great, even without many other star pieces on the defense. Two great examples of this are the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. Other than their X factor interior rushers, Chris Jones and Fletcher Cox, neither of the defense possess that much star power in the other levels of their defense. However, both defenses are ranked in the top 4 in fewest points allowed and top 10 in most of the defense categories. This is because a strong inside on the defensive line allows a team to stop the run and rush the passer without needing to put much effort into it. When you can slow down the inside run game without stacking more DBs in the box, then you can simultaneously play great coverage in the back end of your defense while also having that threat to make run stops in the backfield. Not to mention a DT that constantly requires double teams and collapses the pocket from the inside makes it much easier for the edge rushers to get sacks as they’re singled up in blocking most times and also can chase down QBs as they scramble out toward them. You see this in both of these defenses as well, with the Eagles and Chiefs both having a rookie edge rusher with double-digit sacks. That’s why you can’t look any further than these two teams when selecting your All-Pro interior D-line.
