Does Home Field Advantage Matter in PML for Madden 22? 2023 Season Edition!

For the third season running, we are going to study how much home field advantage matters in PML! The first two seasons told us home field was a decent point of strength over being a road dog.

EDITOR NOTES: This case study is being ran after Week 14, the first 2 seasons of this study were done after Week 13. Also, this study has been done before the conclusion of Bears vs Vikings in Week 14, oh well.

AFC EAST:

Bills:          Home  5-1        Away  5-2

Patriots:    Home 4-3        Away  3-3

Dolphins:   Home 4-2       Away  3-4

Jets:          Home 0-6        Away 0-7

2023 Total:     Home  13-12       Away 11-16

2022 Total:      Home 15-11      Away 12-11

2021 Total:      Home 12-13      Away 14-9

DIVISION SYNOPSIS: The anchor known as the Jets do their yearly thing to our case study. Nothing crazy to see here…

AFC NORTH:

Ravens:    Home  1-5        Away  5-2

Steelers:  Home   1-5       Away 5-2

Bengals:  Home  4-3        Away 1-5

Browns:   Home 1-5          Away 3-4

2023 Total:      Home 7-18     Away 13-13

2022 Total:      Home 8-17    Away 11-12

2021 Total:      Home 10-14   Away 6-16

DIVISION SYNOPSIS:  For the 2nd year in a row the North ends up substantially better on the road than at home. I couldn’t tell you why. Only the Bengals have found remote success at home in 2023.

AFC SOUTH:

Texans:   Home. 5-2         Away  6-1

Jaguars:  Home 4-1         Away  5-3

Titans:     Home  2-5        Away  4-2

Colts:       Home  4-3       Away   2-4

2023 Total:      Home  15-11      Away 17-10

2022 Total:      Home 16- 10      Away 9-14

2021 Total:      Home  21-6        Away 13-10

DIVISION SNYPOSIS: Nothing too wild here…except the Titans. With one of the more intriguing home field advantages in the game, the Titans have looked more at home away from Tennessee.

AFC WEST:

Broncos:   Home  6-1      Away  5-1

Chiefs:      Home  4-1      Away  5-3

Raiders:    Home  2-5      Away  4-2

Chargers:  Home  4-3      Away  2-4

2023 Totals:      Home 16-10    Away  16-10

2022 Total:        Home 17-9      Away 13-10

2021 Total:        Home 15-11     Away 12-10

DIVISION SYNOPSIS: How about that, the same home and away record. This is very similar to the AFC South, with the Raiders being this division’s version of the Titans.

AFC CONFERENCE:

2023 Total:   Home:  51-51          Away:  57-49

2022 Total:   Home  56-47           Away  45-47

2021 Total:    Home 58-44           Away 45-45

CONFERENCE SYNOPSIS:  Home field advantage was real the first few years in the AFC, but now we’re seeing a shift for unknown reasons. And we can’t blame the AFC North, 2022 also factored in the AFC North’s abnormalities. Let’s check out the NFC before we fully make judgments…

NFC EAST:

Eagles:     Home  6-0      Away  7-0

WFT:         Home: 6-1      Away  4-2

Cowboys:  Home  5-1      Away  3-4

Giants:      Home. 2-5      Away  2-4

2023 Total:         Home  19-7       Away  17-10

2022 Total:         Home  16-8      Away 15-9

2021 Total:          Home 12-11      Away 10-16

DIVISION SYNOPSIS: The Cowboys seem to prefer to play at JerryWorld in 2023, otherwise the East is unfazed by which stadium they play at.

NFC NORTH:

Lions:        Home: 4-2       Away  6-1

Packers:   Home  4-3        Away  4-2

Bears:       Home  1-5        Away  1-5

Vikings:    Home  2-5        Away  0-5

2023 Total:         Home  11-15      Away 11-14

2022 Total:         Home 12-10     Away 7-13

2021 Total:         Home  14-8      Away 19-7

DIVISION SYNOPSIS: Season 1 is looking like it was the perfect schedule for the North, and these past 2 seasons have been doses of reality. Especially at the bottom, where newcomers Bacon and Wumbo have made zero impressions compared to their previous owners. Home/Away splits haven’t affected this division at all, like many in 2023.

NFC SOUTH:

Bucs:         Home  4-3       Away  1-5

Panthers:  Home  5-2        Away  1-5

Saints:      Home  2-4        Away  2-5

Falcons     Home  2-5       Away  1-5

2023 Total:         Home  13-14   Away  5-20

2022 Total:        Home 5-17       Away   11-16

2021 Total:         Home 9-14      Away   7-18

DIVISION SYNOPSIS: The South has done a complete 180 from 2022, now suddenly a home-hungry division. Only the Saints have managed multiple road wins.

NFC WEST:

Rams:           Home  4-3      Away  5-1

Seahawks:   Home  4-4      Away  3-2

49ers:          Home  1-6       Away  3-3

Cardinals:   Home  0-6       Away  2-5

2023 Total:         Home  9-19    Away:  13-11

2022 Total:          Home 14-8     Away 15-13

2021 Total:          Home 10-13    Away 7-18

DIVISION SYNOPSIS:  The 49ers and Cardinals would rather be anywhere else besides their own home field.

NFC CONFERENCE:

2023 Total:      Home 52-55        Away  46-55

2022 Total:      Home 47-43             Away   48-51

2021 Total:       Home 45-46            Away   43-57

CONFERENCE SYNOPSIS: While home field holds the better winning percentage in the NFC, it’s not strong enough to declare home field being advantageous in the NFC in 2023. But this has been a consistent theme so far this cycle in the NFC.

PML 2023 Totals Through 14 Weeks:

2023 Total:      Home  103-106     Away 103-102

2022 Total:      Home  103-90       Away  93-98

2021 Total:      Home 103-90        Away  88-102

OVERALL SYNOPSIS: Home field has lost it’s luster in 2023 after being an over double digit advantage the first two seasons of the cycle. I gotta say, I have more questions than answers after this year’s review. Feel free to share your own theories! But for now, we close this case study until 2024!
