The Grade
Jaguars: Travis Etienne Jr: B+, he’s been very solid all around while taking on all of the run game pretty much. He’s more of an elusive back so the lack of broken tackles isn’t concerning, but would like to see his yards per carry and receiving stats go up while overall usage come down.
Titans: Bijan Robinson: A+, he’s been one of the best running backs in the league as a rookie and has handles the massive amount of work well (without being over the limit). He’s had the most long runs, the most yards per carry, the most broken, tackles and yards after contact. If he gets a real second ability or good X-Factor when he inevitably gets one… scary hours. Would like to see the Titans get him into the endzone more on the ground.
Colts: Zach Charbonnet: B-, he’s been way too inconsistent from week to week but has still been better than most thought. He was drafted to replace Jonathan Taylor and he’s done a fine job given he has a much smaller workload than Taylor would have had. His broken tackles and yards after contact are insanely impressive, but he’s weighed down by pretty much being absent from the passing game due to Hines being the receiving back. Overall he’s been one of the best rookie running backs despite being taken at the end of the 3rd round after like 6 other backs.
Texans: Alvin Kamara: B-, he hasn’t played poorly but he was the best overall player in the trade that cost the 2nd overall pick and for now at least, those rookie quarterbacks have proven to be more valuable than Kamara. He’s been pretty average running the ball but he has split carries with Dameon Pierce who just got his superstar status back. He has been pretty fantastic as a receiver however so he deserves a lot of credit for making the most of still being stuck with Jameis Winston.
The Future Outlook
Jaguars: Travis Etienne Jr: He hasn’t progressed to a superstar yet and will have to be extended after next season. It’ll be dependent on what he wants out of a contract but if he stays a star and wants a bag I’d bet on him getting replaced. If he can make that jump or is content taking a reasonable contract, he’ll stay and he’ll stay the bellcow.
Titans: Bijan Robinson: Rookie contract for the rest of the cycle, superstar already and would bet on him being an X-Factor by the end of the season at the latest. Clearly a huge part of the passing offense as well as being a great runner. Not. Going. Anywhere.
Colts: Zach Charbonnet: Also on a rookie contract for the rest of the cycle but hasn’t been given the workhorse load despite being the starter. A speed upgrade or two, or a superstar bump would secure his spot as the guy for the rest of the cycle. Hines will most likely stay as the lead receiving back, though.
Texans: Alvin Kamara: The most expensive running back contract in the division, but he is the highest overall and an X-Factor who will most likely keep his abilities. Pierce will probably still take a sizable chunk of the volume but Kamara is the guy in Houston and he’s on contract up until the last season of the cycle where him and Pierce will both be up for extensions. That’ll be decision time as I doubt the Texans keep both.
Overall, this is a strong division of running backs despite losing Jonathan Taylor and they are all a huge part of their offense and whether or not they succeed.
