Transcript: Giants Head Coach Press Conference

Can you summarize what it was like playing against the Seahawks last week?

The Seahawks area familiar opponent for the Giants. They eliminated us in the playoffs last season. We came into the game with the upmost respect for the Seahawks despite their .500 record. Ultimately the rain conditions played a huge outcome in the ball game, with their rookie QB CJ Stroud missing some passes early and their RB fumbling at the goal line. Establishing Saquon Barkley and Matt Breida became our priority after seeing Seattle's miscues on the opening drive of the game, and combined with good defense was enough to squeak out a win.

How is the team handling the bye week this week?

We are big chillin. Saquon Barkley has invited everyone to his house to party it up.

Can you talk about the development of Mark Evans II so far?

Mark has been a key cog in our refined offensive line this season. He was not expected to be a day 1 starter, but after a fine preseason we decided to play the rookie right away at LG. He's held up better in pass protection than expected, and as long as he holds in there while providing a boost to the run game we consider it to be an above average rookie campaign.

How has Brandon Graham’s experience in the league helped the team so far?

Brandon Graham has done a good job helping our young guys in the front 7 like Thibs, Azeez, and Dexter and even stepped up while Thibs was hurt for a few weeks.

What is the status of Marquise Goodwin and when is he set to return?

He'll be back after the bye week, most likely returning to his kick returning duties when he returns.

Over your career, what makes a team better at not turning the ball over as the season goes along? What kind of things you need to emphasize? How much of it is coaching? How much of it is a mental part? Physical part?

It comes down to what chances are you willing to take, especially for a Quarterback with the ball in their hands. It also comes down to hits that can be viewed as avoidable with the ball in your hands. And lastly going with conservative carrying sometimes is necessary.

Some would say this team has the toughest remaining schedule ahead. How do you prepare for such a difficult remaining schedule?

We can only take it one game at a time. We face a very tough Cardinals squad next week and we know they have the talent and coaching to make us pay if we enter the game thinking about the next few weeks instead of the next few days.

How quickly can you tell if a young player is a football player if he thinks about it because it seems like at the Combine they’re all saying the right thing and it’s the job. How quickly does it take?

It takes at least up to some preseason reps. Sometimes you can tell when someone is a physical speciman on draft night, but for most guys you need to see them in an NFL environment to comfortably judge their skillsets.

How valuable is the self-scouting process that you go through during the Bye Week? There's the physical piece, but also that component, as well.

Well we don't have the draft class yet so we're chillin.

Are you seeing the speed of the game starting to slow down for some of the rookies?

As mentioned before Mark continues to get better each week. Jalen Catelon continues to make progress and the coaching staff is taking a look at finding him more snaps to get on the field each week.

Did you scout BYE before the draft? If so, what stood out about him?

No I did not scout a bye week before the draft.

How do you see the competition level in the NFC East currently?

The NFC East is currently a tight battle. The Commanders are once again a huge threat, and it seems the Eagles have shown some signs of resurgence. There's a chance the NFC East could send as many as 3 teams into the playoffs.

Can you describe kind of the energy or the mood and the vibe in the building now coming in the home stretch?

We are feeling good about how the talent on our roster is playing, and look forward to seeing them make plays as we pursue a playoff spot.

Some would say your roster is one of the better teams in the league. Would you agree with that? Do you see any weaknesses in your team as you self-scout?

We feel like our team is still young and is not at their peak potential. But sometimes what you don't know can't hurt you.

The defense is playing really well right now. What do you think are biggest contributing factors to that?

Our defense has played well on all 3 levels and has been very disciplined.

Many rank your offensive line as one of the best in the league. How important is having a great offensive line?

Given our offensive playstyle this season having a strong OLine has been key. Shaq Mason and Mark Evans at the guard spots have been huge additions along with the continued development of our tackles.

Your team is one of the oldest teams in the league in terms of average age. How do you feel about the future of this team while not having as many young players as other teams? Do you think having an older team has its benefits?

Our team is a good mix of youth and some veterans. Just the way it should be in the NFL.

Can you speak to the overall team health?

Our team is ready to go against Arizona as of today, no major injuries to speak of.

Who is your quarterback, and why?

Vanilla Vick babyyy, Daniel Jones's dual threat ability is a big part of our offense and we continue to trust him when called upon.

How would you assess where your team is near the halfway point of the season?

We're performing above average right now. It's not pretty, but effective.
