Transcript: Chiefs Head Coach Press Conference

How does the loss this week prepare you for the next game?

There is always something to to take from a game whether it's a win or a loss. We see some things we can improve. We let the game get away from us in the second, and made some mistakes early that we need to eliminate in the future.

Can you summarize what it was like playing against the Browns last week?

We had a slow start in that game, but once the defense got going they stayed on fire throughout and really gave us a lot of momentum. Our run game was able to complement the defensive effort, and we got a big win to start the season.

Can you talk about the development of James Williams so far?

James Williams is an incredible young player, and he is showing so far that he can really do it all. Between the first 2 games and preseason we have seen him go out there and make big stops, force fumbles, and grab interceptions. We think he could develop into a hall of fame caliber talent.

Can you talk about what it’s like to prepare to go against a player like Quenton Nelson?

Quenton Nelson is a talent that is difficult to prepare for because he is going to take most of what you throw at him in stride, but we got a lot of hungry defenders that are going to keep working and give him a handful to deal with.

How has Travis Kelce’s experience in the league helped the team so far?

Travis Kelce is a great leader and uses that to motivate and guide his fellow teammates. No one is more reliable than that guy in a sticky situation on the field.

What is the status of Trey Smith and when is he set to return?

An injury like this is different for everyone, so for now we are just taking it week by week and seeing how Trey is feeling, and eventually well get him back on the practice field.

What makes Zach Charbonnet so good?

He has a rare combination of speed and size, and the man is just difficult to tackle. He does the most damage when he can shed tackle at the first level and get to the second level of the defense. One he is in the open field he's a scary guy to tackle and he has the speed to breakaway on any give play.

What were some of the contributing factors to the loss this week?

Mistakes early were a huge factor. We didn't secure the ball and lost a fumble to kick of the game and had another one lost late when trying to get back in it. Just missing out on opportunities and giving the Colts too many chances with good field position really hurt us.

RB Isiah Pacheco is so impressive, how hard he runs is so apparent. What else about his skill set makes him special?

He is another one of those guys who is very scary to tackle if hes in the open field. He's fast and elusive and can get you there, but also has the size to punish you as well. His carrier vision this season has been superb, and I really feel he has taken his game to the next level.

How much of a problem is Kwity Paye on the defensive line?

Kwity Paye was very disruptive, and he came out there and did exactly what we hoped to keep him from doing. That just goes to show how great of a player he is, because we really tried to take him out of the game and he still made big plays out there.

Did you scout Brock Bowers before the draft? If so, what stood out about him?

We knew Brock Bowers was a top rookie talent, but I think it''s clear we underestimated him with the game he had against us today. He showed that he can make big catches in traffic and he is not an easy guy to tackle once he has the ball.

What are your thoughts about the Colts just in general as a team?

We knew going into the game the Colts is a formidable opponent. We felt like we had the game plan to win, but as I stated previously we didn't take care of the ball, and made crucial mistakes in key situations, and that just not something you can do against a team like the Colts. If you let them gain momentum they will ride it, and that's what they did in this game.
