Transcript: Panthers Head Coach Press Conference

What were the keys to the team’s victory this week?

First and foremost, the key to our victory this week was our ability to shut down the Falcons' run game. We were well aware of their propensity to rely on RB Jonathan Taylor, so we made it a priority to neutralize that threat. Part of our strategy involved playing defense while on offense, controlling the tempo of the game and focusing on our own run game. This allowed us to put the Falcons in situations where they felt pressed for time, leading to potential mistakes on their part.

Another crucial factor was Anthony Richardson. His dynamic running ability presented a challenge for the Falcons' defense, which has a lot of speed but struggled to find an answer for Richardson. By keeping them stressed and forcing them to account for all 11 men in the run game, we were able to create advantageous situations for our offense.

We were successful in getting pressure on their quarterback. In the past, we've had difficulty doing so, but we knew they had some offensive line injuries that we could exploit. By taking advantage of their backups, we were able to increase the pressure on their QB, contributing to our overall success this week.

Another noteworthy aspect of our victory was our efficiency in the red zone. Our offense managed to reach the red zone seven times throughout the game. Out of those seven attempts, we successfully scored five of them. This high conversion rate played a significant role in securing our win, as it showcased our ability to capitalize on opportunities and maintain offensive momentum. Our performance in the red zone reflects the hard work and dedication that our team has put into perfecting our execution in high-pressure situations.

What is the status of Anthony Richardson and when is he set to return?

The status of QB Anthony Richardson is still being evaluated following his injury during a pile-up, in which we believe his ankle was stepped on. It's a tough blow for our team, as he is a significant part of our offense, contributing not only in the passing game but also as our leading rusher.

Despite the setback, we're confident in QB Matt Corral's ability to step up and take on the starting role. We believe we can run the same offense with Matt, and his readiness for this moment is partly due to the significant reps he took during the preseason. In a way, it's a blessing in disguise that Anthony's injury occurred early in the season, allowing Matt to transition more smoothly.

As for Richardson, he is seeking a second opinion on his injury, and we are awaiting the results. In terms of ankle dislocations, they can certainly impact a player's ability to run. However, we have full confidence that, once he returns, Richardson's success in the run game will not be compromised. Our medical team will ensure he receives the best care possible, and we're optimistic about his recovery and eventual return to the field.

Did you scout Jeremiah Alexander before the draft? If so, what stood out about him?

Yes, we did scout him before the draft, and we were impressed by what we saw. Ultimately, we chose Hodge, but Alexander's skillset certainly caught our attention. In fact, Alexander's style of play reminds us a lot of Patrick Willis, a comparison that speaks highly of his potential.

He demonstrates excellent instincts and a high football IQ, allowing him to quickly diagnose plays and make the right decisions on the field. He showcases exceptional athleticism, with great speed and strength that enables him to effectively cover a wide range of responsibilities, from blitzing to dropping back in coverage. His tenacity and aggressive nature, paired with his solid tackling ability, make him a disruptive force both against the run and in the pass rush.

How do you see the competition level in the NFC South currently?

We feel that the competition level in the NFC South is always strong, but at the moment, we don't perceive any of the teams as being overwhelmingly dominant. Over the past 20 games or so, we've managed to secure victories against all of them, which gives us confidence in our ability to compete within the division.

Looking at the offseason moves made by the Saints, Bucs, and Falcons, we're not overly impressed or concerned about the changes they've made. Each team in the division, including ourselves, is still in the process of finding their identity for this season. Our quarterback situation has been affected by injuries, the Bucs have been experiencing a QB carousel, the Saints have been focusing more on their run game, and the Falcons are dealing with a significant number of injuries on their offensive line.

All of these factors contribute to a competitive but somewhat uncertain landscape within the NFC South. As we progress through the season, we'll continue to adapt and refine our strategies to maintain our edge and compete at the highest level within our division.
