Nef’s PML Power Rankings- Heading Into Week 8

What is this?

Nef’s Power Rankings is a Power Rankings that will be provided weekly for PML members to enjoy! It’s rankings that don’t necessarily go off popular opinion or past results. It’s a fresh new look into power rankings that completely takes the popularity contest and bias out of it!

What is our goal?

Our goal is to provide a better understanding on who is really performing the best within a specific season using nothing but stats!

Who is involved?

Nefarious- Data gathering and inputing weekly.

Z- Weekly summary on the biggest surprises week to week to provide some substance to the Power Rankings and graphic itself.

CB- Weekly graphic to add something pretty to look at!

What stats are involved? Also what matters most?

Our Power Rankings are based into multiple scores. First you have your Record Score which gives you a certain amount of points every week. Making wins and loses weigh heavily week to week. Then you have your Weekly Score which gathers multiple stats based on that week to give you an overall score and performance on a week to week basis. Next you have Streak which takes your recent winning or losing streak to also adjust your ranking week to week. Then you have Team Overall that plays a very small factor when deciding where teams fall weekly. Finally we have our Total Score which is a combination of average Weekly Score, Record Score, Streak and Team Overall.

All of these things matter and factor into the final result but some matter more than others. Based on formulas used in this spreadsheet i can tell you roughly what effects the rankings mostly week to week and what effects them the least.

(From most to least)

Record Score– This is simple and self explanatory. The more you win the higher your score is. Wins and loses both weigh evenly. Wins effect it in a positive manner and loses effect it in a negative manner. For ties both team get half of what a win would get them.

Weekly Score– Recent weekly scores matter the most after record score. Older weeks (combined in 2’s) will effect the Total Score a little less and less as the season goes on. Weekly Scores does have multiple factors in it itself so I’ll break it down in most important to least.

– Record Differential in a win
– Point Differential
– Record Differential in a loss
– Ranking Differential in a win/loss (based on previous weeks total rankings)
– Team Overall Differential in a win/loss (based on team overall going into that weeks game)
– Points For/Points Against (small amount positive points for high scoring teams, and small amount subtracted for bad defenses)

Streak- With every win streak or losing streak you’ll receive a small hit or bump to your Total Score. So even if you lose one after having a big win streak you won’t punished by it in your total score. But the longer the streak is the more effect it can have on your Total Score and ranking.

Team Overall– Team Overall should matter. Especially when building a team is half of the battle. Though it matters it will not have a significant effect on our Power Rankings.

Thats a quick summary of what goes into it week to week. Please DM me (Nefarious) if you have any other questions.

Z’s Island: The 4 Biggest Surprises Heading into Week 8

1. Atlanta Falcons (2-4) Shock the League: Heading into week 7 sitting at 1-4, I guarantee no one expected or even gave the Falcons a chance to beat the Rams this week. Despite 2 early game starts riddled by lag issues (lag gate?), the Falcons originally cruised to a 34-17 win to potentially ignite their season. Desmond Ridder, while not spectacular, played efficient, safe, football. He completed 16 of his 19 passes for 273 yards. While Johnathan Taylor didn’t have an explosive game, he scored 2 touchdowns on 10 rushing attempts and tacked on 69 yards against the tough Rams run defense. Tyquan Thornton also had a big day with 6 catches for 145 yards. The story of this game might be the Falcons defense. They forced 3 DJ Uiagalelei interceptions on the day, one of which was returned by linebacker Troy Andersen for a touchdown. The Falcons have a huge matchup with the 3x division champion Tampa Bay Bucs next week. Whether or not they win that game will determine if they have a real chance to win the division this cycle.

2. Kansas City Chiefs (4-3) Shut the Texans Up: Don’t look now, but the Chiefs are above .500! Although it took a very questionable pass interference call and an awful late-game field goal attempt by the Texans, the Chiefs hung around long enough to beat the Texans, who overlooked this game on their schedule. Trevor Lawrence was extremely efficient, completing 15 of his 19 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Marquee offseason acquisition Keaton Mitchell had an incredible day on the ground, rushing for 171 yards and 3 touchdowns, while also breaking 8 Texans tackles. The surprise of the season so far must be the Chiefs, who many, me included, expected to continue to freefall without Mahomes. A matchup with the 1-loss Dallas Cowboys looms large, let’s see if they can continue to perform now that they are no longer under the radar.

3. Washington Commanders (2-5) “Pull the Plug” On the Chargers: Picture this: you’re a lifelong Washington Commanders fan that spent good money to attend a Commanders game. You sit in disbelief as your team is currently down 30-3 to the Los Angeles Chargers with 2:57 left in the 3rd quarter, and one 10-minute quarter to follow and the Chargers have the ball. Due to the fact you may not attend another Commanders game for a year, you decide to stick around as the rest of the fans leave. What happens in the next 1 ¼ quarters you’ll remember for the rest of your life. The Commanders would end up winning this game 31-30 in one of the most improbable comebacks you’ll ever see. While their season isn’t technically over, if the Commanders want to make the playoffs, they’ll have to put some wins together, and fast.

4. The Mistake Bowl in rainy Foxboro goes to the New York Jets (3-4): In a game in which turnovers plagued both teams, the recurring theme of the Patriots not being able to close games late struck again. The Patriots took a 31-19 lead into the 4th quarter and proceeded to get outscored 24 to 6 in the 4th quarter. Several head scratching interceptions, including an RPO that went right to the corner on a bubble screen-turned-streak left the Patriots fans angry and disappointed. While Patrick Mahomes wasn’t perfect, he threw for 452 yards and 4 TDs. Chase Claypool dominated, reeling in 9 catches for 207 yards and a touchdown, while rookie WR Julian Fleming got in on the action, putting together a 7 catch, 130-yard, 3 touchdown day. The Jets picked up their 3rd win on the season and moved to 3-4 on the year. The Patriots also dropped to 3-4 following this loss.

“Cracking The Code!”- Codes’ Storylines of The Week

Rams Downfall: DK without a doubt is one of the best users in PML and has a ring to show for it, but last year even though he made the playoffs and had a good regualr season… he looked different. Then this season he’s 4-3 tied with the Niners and Hawks for 1st place, and second year superstar QB DJ is having a horrible season compared to last year. DJ finished his rookie season with 51 TDs and 25 INTs compared to this season he has 15 TDs and 15 INTs… it just isn’t the same type of production. Everyone thought he was setup to make another big run adding those lockdown CBs, but right now he has the 20th worst passing defense. Some might say it’s due to Thomas losing his abilities, maybe people are figuring out how to beat the “pinch cheese” defense, or maybe it’s just a bad stretch for DK. Only time will tell.

Same Ole’ TC: The trade committee is one of if not THE most complained about subject in PML, but unlike other instances this complaint is actually valid. The committee is so inconsistent. We have seen them deny TLaw being traded just to let him get traded a season later, let Fields and Love get swapped but deny 49ers and I to swap QBs because it isn’t realistic, let Mahomes get traded… but now Herbert is untouchable??? They also do little to no research and put too much “ifs” into the equation. They were trying to stop Dlloyd due to cap issues even though he had the cap all figured out… they didn’t let me trade Carlton Davis to the 49ers because he was going to regress (he later went on to become superstar with great abilities in the following offseason). JT has said sim score isn’t really used anymore because we have a good group of guys and that gen chat pretty much handles itself, but why can’t it be the same for trades? We know nobody in here is going to make a franchise changing trade and then leave the server the next day… they will deal with it all cycle long. We already see unbalanced trades where one side is the obvious winner. The committee is just outdated and not needed anymore. They take forever (close to 48 hours each time) to not do any research, be inconsistent, and not give valuable feedback ( “I just don’t like it… it makes me sick blah”).

Texans True Colors: The Texans last year had a pretty solid season making the playoffs, but Drama would paint the picture like he won the Bowl. In chat after every win “put respect on these Texans”, gen chat could be talking about basketball and somehow Drama would try to turn chat into about him and the Texans. Where is that this season? Where is Drama? He went into hiding after the playoff loss, but he had a reason for it and claimed he’s back… but where is he? Well he’s currently sitting at 2-5 fresh off a loss to Mali with a Jags, Hawks, & Jags stretch so he can easily become 2-8. Kyler aka the QB the league didn’t want him to have currently is sitting with 11 TDs and 15 INTs. When I first came into PML I thought Drama was super entertaining and decent at the game… but now it’s just the same thing over and over to the point where it’s dry and no longer entertaining and now he’s not even decent. Hopefully Drama starts making content again and starts competing because I love my trash talkers, but I like when they can back it up and when they lose they don’t go into hibernation.

Codes’ Unknown Heroes of the Week

Julian Fleming (7 catches, 130 yards, 3 TDs): I’d say unless your a PML junkie you most likely haven’t heard of Fleming, but with this performance and how coach Fallen was talking about him… I’m sure you will hear his name a lot more.

James Pierre (2 tackles & 2 INTs): James Pierre had a total of 1 tackle and 0 INTs last year in Tampa, he was able to double his season totals in just one game. That’s pretty impressive if you ask me. Will he continue this… no, but you get to wear the cape this week.
