The draft has come and gone and the New York Giants officially have a new quarterback on their roster. Let’s backtrack for a moment. The Giants started with picks 1.24 and 2.5 in the first and second rounds. They had 13 players they would have taken with pick 6 on their board. As the picks came off the board, Quarterback Ewers from Texas, kept falling and falling. Coach Burn knew once Ewers fell out of the top ten that he would need to jump everyone else and get pick 11. He made the call to the Lions and traded pick 1.11 for 1.24 and 2.5. With this pick they drafted Ewers.
Ewers has a great shot at some sort of developmental trait this season. In saying that, Jones and Ewers will compete this offseason to see who will be the starter. They are both vastly different quarterbacks, with Jones being much faster but with less arm strength, while Ewers is slower but has the arm strength that is needed in the league to be successful long term. Ewers is a raw talent at the moment, so while he is developing with attribute requests, Jones does have a shot at keeping his starting spot if he can show he will be more accurate for the time being. In saying that, let’s take a look at the rest of the Giants draft.
1.11: QB Quinn Ewers 70 OVR
3.6: CB Kamari Lassiter 70 OVR
With Mckinney being let go, the Giants are looking for a starting SS. We have many guys who could play in the meantime but in the draft we were looking for someone long term. Lassiter is a guy who could transition from CB to SS, in some time, through attribute requests.
4.6: DT Brandon Fiske 69 OVR
With money being an issue, the Giants went to the best defensive tackle they had left on their board at the time. It was looked at as a body who could fill a roster spot, without having to change the position of another player. Fiske, at 79 speed, 86 acceleration, and 88 strength, with 93 hit power is a player who can be molded into a defensive tackle of the future.
5.6: SS Lathan Ransom 70 OVR
Ransom was selected with the same mindset that he had the tools to become the safety of the future. He comes out of the box with 90 speed, 89 acceleration, 73 zone, 70 tackle, and 90 hit power. He will be the starting SS at the moment and will be a great piece for the rest of the cycle.
6.6: RT Nolan Rucci 74 OVR
The Giants addressed a huge need late in the draft and got one of the best lineman in the entire draft. Rucci is an immediate start on their offensive line and with him they will ensure that they have 4 young core players for the rest of the cycle.
7.6 TE MaCallan Castle 70 OVR
The Giants needed a third tight end that was sure handed and could back up Waller. They could have gone with one of the many freaks of nature at the position but they went with the sure handed guy with decent speed who won’t be seen stretching out the defense, but will be reliable on those third and short plays.
The Giants didn’t go for the flashiest of players like alot of other teams in the draft. They went with positions of need and got players who they feel could contribute minimally at the moment, but would be great building pieces for the future.
