Transcript: Panthers Head Coach Press Conference

What are your thoughts about the Ravens going into this week?

Well, the Ravens are an interesting team, aren't they? Last season's record was, let's say, less than stellar, but that's the beauty of a new season – everyone gets a fresh start. We're not taking them lightly, though. They've had their share of struggles, but every team in this league can surprise you. I mean, they did manage to win a couple of games last year, right?

Going into this week, we're focused on exploiting their weaknesses while being mindful of their strengths. They've got some talent, no doubt about it, and they're probably as hungry for a win as we are. It's like a chess match, but with bigger pieces and more grass stains. We're preparing to bring our A-game, and I'm confident our guys are up for the challenge. After all, we're not here to just participate; we're here to compete.

And let's not forget, it's only Week 2. The season is a marathon, not a sprint. We're building something here, and this game is another step in that process.

Can you talk about what it’s like to prepare to go against a player like Lamar Jackson?

Preparing for Lamar Jackson? It's a bit like prepping for a hurricane while hoping it downgrades to a tropical storm. You know the potential for damage is there, but you're doing everything in your power to mitigate it. Jackson's a phenomenal athlete – fast, agile, and with an arm that can make you pay if you underestimate him. But hey, this isn't our first rodeo.

Our defensive squad has been drilling non-stop, focusing on discipline and containment. We're not just preparing for Jackson the runner, but also Jackson the passer. It's like playing a high-stakes game of tag, and he's 'it.' Our guys need to be in the right place at the right time, maintaining their assignments while being ready to adapt on the fly. It's a challenge, but who doesn't love a good challenge?

And let's be real, facing a player of Jackson's caliber is a great test for our team. It's an opportunity to measure ourselves against one of the best. We're not just going to sit back and admire his highlight reel, though. We plan to make him work for every yard and remind him that our defense isn't just for show. We're here to play, and play hard.

Did you scout Jared Verse before the draft? If so, what stood out about him?

Jared Verse, oh absolutely, we scouted him. You'd have to be living under a rock not to notice a talent like that. The kid's got a motor that just doesn't quit, and his ability to disrupt plays is something you can't ignore. But, you know, we were pretty set with our edge rushers – Brian Burns, Yetur Gross-Matos, and Amare Barno – a trio that I'd put up against any in the league.

What stood out about Verse? Well, first off, his explosiveness off the line is something to behold. He's got this knack for getting into the backfield that makes you think he knows the snap count. And his technique, for a young player, is quite advanced. He's got the kind of talent that makes you think, "Wow, I wish we had an extra first-round pick lying around."

But in the draft, you've got to play the hand you're dealt. We knew he'd be off the board early, and our focus was elsewhere. Still, it's fun to watch these young guys come into the league and make their mark. Verse is one to watch, but for now, we're pretty happy with the guys we've got terrorizing quarterbacks. Let's just say, I'm not losing any sleep over it.
