The Giants have traded ROLB Kayvon Thibodeaux and Jalin Hyatt for Stefon Diggs and Greg Rousseau. The Giants and Bill originally agreed on Thibodeaux for Diggs and the Bills first round pick but the trade was denied by those in the great beyond as they deemed it was too much value for the Bills to give up. Everyone else in the league can see the regression that will come into play, but the gatekeepers of the league known as the trade committee could not and were over-valuing Diggs.
The Giants offense needed something different. They have the speedy guys who can get open in zone coverage, but they needed someone who could beat the press when teams decide to press and stack the box in order to stop Barkley. This is where Diggs comes into play. In the offseason, Deebo Samuel was almost a Giant. The Giants and Texans sent a trade that would have sent Samuel and a third to the Giants, while the Texans received a first round pick. The Texans backed out of the trade after it was submitted so the Giants were forced to look elsewhere.
The trade talks went back and forth and after sending in three different trades, this one was approved. Diggs brings in an all around receiver who will provide relief to the run game, as well as being able to run the ball himself when needed. Rousseau immediately replaces Thibodeaux with a player who is similar in size and attributes, albeit a little bit slower. Rousseau is surrounded by a bunch of pass rushers as well as the best defensive tackle in the league. The hope is this frees up Rousseau in order for him to succeed and get a development trait. Thibodeaux was replaceable given his lack of quality abilities.
All in all, this trade was one that provides immediate players to the team while also providing one for the future as well. Diggs will look to have a great season in order to stop the regression that he will face. Coach Burn already has some ideas on how to use Diggs in their offense.
The Giants now have officially gotten better in their overall team talent and must show results quickly. Ewers will need to step up and hit the open guy instead of overthrowing on key downs. Barkley and Diggs will be the focal pieces of the offense, with Gray, Slayton, and Waller supporting them. Time will tell how this trade stacks up, but up next is the Cowboys, where both teams will be looking for their first win.
