Season 3- Week 6 Baltimore Ravens vs Buffalo Bills
I love stats, stats are one of those things that are completely compelling to me. With all the abilities, stats and immersive things Madden has (lol). It’s crazy how i would have to do work to find some of the advanced stats that we have in real life and break them down for you in an article, but it does add to the content pool! Not sure if this will be a reoccurring series of articles or not. It did take a lot of time and film watching to get these numbers and probably wont lead to a lot in the case of substance when it comes to the written word. But without babbling more, lets jump into it.
Advanced Passing Stat
There is only one advanced passing stat i was able to come up with for now (Moreso i was willing to do than “come up with”). That stat being the Aggressiveness (AGG) on throws from a Quarterback in a game. Aggressiveness tracks the amount of passing attempts a quarterback makes that are into tight coverage, where there is a defender within 1 yard or less of the receiver at the time of completion or incompletion. AGG is shown as a % of attempts into tight windows over all passing attempts. This will help gauge who isn’t making the best reads or “living on the edge” more often than not.
Buffalo Bills- Josh Allen
Josh Allen is one of the best Quarterbacks you can have in Madden. His ability to fit throws into tight windows is one of the biggest skills he possesses. That being said he finished 19/26 with 523 yards, 6 touchdowns and no interceptions. After watching the game back he only made 3 Aggressive throws in 16 throws for this game. Which gave him a 0.12 AGG% on his throws. One of the key factors was Beast making the right read at the right times but also his receivers creating separation.
Baltimore Ravens- Lamar Jackson
Lamar is another great Quarterback who can make all the throws. Maybe not with the same velocity but with all the same accuracy. Lamar finished the game with completing 14/28 passes, 278 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. Based on separation from his intended targets Lamar finished with a popping 9 Aggressive throws giving him a AGG% of 0.32. Much higher than his counter part Josh Allen. Is this on the coach or the receivers?
Advanced Rushing Stat
Like Passing, I wanted to do an advanced rushing stat that was pretty easy to handle for now. Maybe we add more in the future. That being said the advanced stat i decided was easy enough to follow was 8-Man Box%. On every rushing play, we calculate how many defenders are stacked in the box at snap. Using that logic, DIB% calculates how often does a rusher see 8 or more defenders in the box against them. This will show how often an opponent has respect for your running game or lack there of when it comes to a passing game.
Buffalo Bills- James Cook
James Cook has everything you want in a Madden back and also some decent abilities to boot. While watching the game there wasn’t many 8 man boxes, alot of blitzes but usually players were coming from the slot and not necessarily from the box. James Cook finished with 18 for 89 yards and only rushed against a 8-man box 2 times the whole game for a 0.11 DIB%. When you have Josh Allen how often can you commit extra defenders to stop the run?
Baltimore Ravens- Keaton Mitchell
Not usually the starter but a solid buildable runningback in terms of Madden, Mitchell has the speed and shiftiness to hurt any opposing defense. Now Mitchell did see a 8-man box only 3 times in this game total. While finishing with 14 carries for 86 yards and a touchdown. His DIB% was 0.21%, which could speak to his effectiveness or maybe even the effectiveness of Lamar Jackson.
Advanced Receiving Stat
There’s a trend with these offensive advanced stats that we’re starting to notice. We only did one here as well. This one was pretty simple and easy to pick when deciding which stat we wanted to do. Separation is key to any wide receivers effectiveness, therefore it was an easy one to pick. Average Separation is the distance (in yards) measured between a WR/TE/RB and the nearest defender at the time of catch or incompletion in man coverage. Who is the toughest to defend or who has a great matchup one on one in the secondary?
Buffalo Bills:
RB James Cook
James cook finished with 3 routes versus man coverage and on those 3 routes he had roughly 5 yards (based on the eye test) of separation total. Which gave him an SEP average of 1.67 yards per man on man attempt.
RB Devin Singletary
Only one attempt to the backup, backup runningback Singletary and it was a good one where he created 5 yards of Separation against a user in man coverage.
WR Gabe Davis
Gabe Davis who drew Marlon Humphrey on most routes ran versus man coverage finished with 4 routes against man coverage for a total of 5 yards of separation. His SEP average was 1.25 yards per man on man attempt.
WR Quez Watkins
Quez is the speedster added from the Eagles recently. On most of his man on man attempts he had the pleasure of blazing past a safety. On 4 man on man attempts he had a total of 11 yards of separation. Which means he had a SEP average of 2.75 yards per route against man on man coverage.
WR Jalin Hyatt
Another receiver added via trade, Hyatt was involved in a trade sending Stefon Diggs out of town. With a total of a eye popping 0 yards of separation. I don’t have to give you the average. You’re smart enough.
TE Dalton Kincaid
Dalton like Hyatt saw only one attempt in man on man coverage sent his way. On that one attempt he did much better than Hyatt. The tightend was able to create a good 3 yards of separation for an SEP average of 3.
Baltimore Ravens
WR Anthony Schwartz
Free Agent draft pick Anthony Schwartz has the speed that naturally creates some separation. On 2 man on man throws that went his way the speedster had 4 yards of total separation for an SEP average of 2.
WR Zay Flowers
An outstanding rookie in real life, Flowers is a solid option in Madden. Unfortunately for him this time around he either didn’t have great routes or just better coverage. In 2 man on man attempts his way, Flowers SEP average was a eye popping 0.
WR Barion Brown
Rookie superstars aren’t easy to come by but the Ravens hit this past draft. Against the 2 man on man attempts by Barion Brown he got a SEP average of 0.5 yards of separation.
WR Rashod Bateman
Bateman saw only a single attempt and had 0 yards of separation.
TE Mark Andrews
Andrews usually creates a lot of separation on most plays but didn’t do that here. In 2 attempts sent his way versus man on man coverage his SEP average was 0.5 yards per attempt.
Advanced Pass Rushing Stat
This one is everyones favorite stat that they wished was in the game….. Pressures. Simple enough pressures are the amount of times that defenders who are rushing the quarterback are either forcing an under pressure throw or making the quarterback run out of the pocket. This is only involving defensive linemen and linebackers. I did not include any defensive backs for now. I really hope they bring this stat in the future since it seems easy enough for the game to keep track of.
Buffalo Bills:
DL Ed Oliver
Oliver created some havoc but only got 1 pressure in this game.
DL Michael Pierce
Michael Pierce is a run stuffer who knows how to rush the passer. He had 1 sack and 1 pressure in this game.
Baltimore Ravens:
DL Odafe Oweh
Ravens legend from last cycle has the speed to threaten every quarterback. This game he finished with 1 pressure and a sack.
DL Travis Jones
Travis Jones like Michael Pierce is known more as a run stopper but got 1 pressure in there as well.
LB Jeremiah Alexander
Alexander is a rookie trying to make an impact game to game. He was able to get 1 pressure this game.
Advanced Coverage Stats
One of my favorite things is seeing how a cornerback does in man to man coverage. Are they able to lock down like their ratings say? Can they get beat by bad Wide Receivers just based on the route? Do you need abilities to be an effective corner? In this segment I will be breaking down how cornerbacks, safeties and linebackers did in man to man coverage based on attempts thrown their way. Even a low number of attempts could speak to their effectiveness.
Buffalo Bills:
DB Levi Wallace
Don’t throw at Levi! He had one attempt his way and allowed 0 completions! Is he a lockdown corner?
DB Kaiir Elam
The young corner who has found his way onto the trading block didn’t allow any room for error in man to man coverage. Lamar went 0 for 1 with an interception when targeting Elam.
DB Taron Johnson
Taron was a mixed bag, he allowed 1 completion on 2 passing attempts for a total of 52 yards.
DB Jaycee Horn
Our goes Tre White, in comes Jaycee Horn. Playing like an elite corner Jaycee didn’t allow a single completion on the 3 attempts sent his way. He also gathered in a pick to boot!
DB Kenny Moore II
Kenny d*** Moore baby. This garbage can still maintains a roster spot somewhere. He was targeted 1 time and allowed the completion for 31 yards.
LB Alan Tisdale
The linebacker didn’t fair the best in coverage allowing 2 of the 3 attempts to be completed for a total of 39 yards.
Baltimore Ravens
DB Marlon Humphrey
Gabe Davis didn’t have to do this man like that. In man to man coverage he gave up 2 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown on 3 attempts!
DB Travis Hunter
Number 1 overall pick wasn’t targeted much but gave up 1 completion on 1 attempt for 8 yards. Josh was 100% when targeting him but did he purposely avoid him?
DB Sauce Gardner
It was a battle of islands between Sauce Gardner and Jaycee Horn. Like Horn, Gardner didn’t allow a single completion on 2 attempts sent his was. He also has a pick 6 to add to the statline.
DB Cole Bishop
Despite the very first attempt sent his way that went for a 81 yard touchdown. Cole Bishop was surprisingly effective? Receivers were 1 for 3 when he was targeted for 81 yards and a touchdown.
DB Marcus Williams
This man didn’t stop a soul when targeted. Josh Allen went 3 for 3 with 77 yards and a touchdown when trageting Marcus Williams in coverage.
LB Trenton Simpson
The speedy linebacker was targeted 1 time for 1 completion for 22 yards and a touchdown. It’s noteworthy to say it was a user coverage.
LB Patrick Queen
Another victim of user coverage. Patrick Queen (ARod) got burnt on a wheel route for a touchdown. Ending Queen’s man to man coverage day with 1 completion on 1 attempt for 83 yards and 1 touchdown.
Conclusion
That’s all the stats i gathered from this week 6 matchup.. it was fun… it was tedious… it was eventful. Let me know in Discord if you would like me to do this for your game! But for now, we are out of here! See yous guys later!
