Transcript: 49ers Head Coach Press Conference

How does the loss this week prepare you for the next game?

It was not the result we were looking for in week 1, but it was nice to finally get our guys on the field and play meaningful football. We have to do a better job protecting Sanders and protecting the football. Part of that is scheming. Part of that is execution. Ready to turn the page and get ready for Carolina.

Can you talk about the development of C.J. Smith so far?

Smith looked good all week in practice and he had a nice catch there in the opener but we have to be active in finding ways to get him the ball. He is so naturally talented that good things happen when the ball is in his hands. Love the work the whole receiver unit has been putting into it this week. Appreciate my position coaches for demanding the best out of these guys.

Which new player are you most excited about and why?

Everyone is talking about CJ and that is reasonable but we have a very good group of rookies working with us this year. I am impressed at the strides Bamba is making and we hope to get him on the field more and more as he starts understanding the language of our secondary. Love the big guys up front. You can't teach 380 pounds at C. That young man is impressive. Keeley is someone that I think has all the physical tools and its on us to clean up his technique and really explain the nuances of the game for him to really show his best. Great young group.
