Transcript: 49ers Head Coach Press Conference

What are your thoughts about the Cardinals going into this week?

They're the team we want to beat because they are the closest to us in the division race and if we lose this game, I don't see us getting enough wins to take the division or get a playoff spot.

Can you summarize what it was like playing against the Bears last week?

We started the game off hot but our lack of touchdowns when in position for them was the reason we lost. Our defense wasn't able to get any stops after the first quarter and it showed with how dominant both QBs played against us.

What is the status of Conrad Hussey and when is he set to return?

He is set to return next week when we have our bye, I'm glad that his recovery is doing good because his last play he had for us, he picked off Lamar Jackson so it would be good to get that rookie back on the field so he can continue to make plays for us.

Over your career, what makes a team better at not turning the ball over as the season goes along? What kind of things you need to emphasize? How much of it is coaching? How much of it is a mental part? Physical part?

For my team, it starts with the offensive line, if they are unable to make holes for the RBs and unable to protect the QB, the team will struggle to make anything happen and that leads to more turnovers as the game goes on. It is a physical and mental aspect because the line can start to crumble when the team is facing a deficit, it can also occur when faced up with players on the defensive side that are better than the line you have.

When the schedules were released this past offseason, analysts said you had one of the easier schedules they've seen. Do you see it that way as well?

Those analysts must have been looking at the wrong team because we have one of the hardest schedules. Our division is tough with all guys being above .500, that doesn't account for us having to face the NFC North which has had the VIkings in it, a team that has won multiple SuperBowls. This schedule has been a tough one for sure but we are still playing competitively throughout and are keeping in the division race so far.

Can you speak to the overall team health?

We are getting healthier now; we have Hussey coming back next week, which means we will only have Lewis Bond on the injury report following the bye week. This healthiness is going to help our team get back on track in the winning column.

How is the team’s morale as you approach the game against the Cardinals?

team morale is looking good, we got our franchise guy in Noah back against the Bears and he was putting on a show for our team in the loss, he is going to play a major part in our game with the Cardinals as Dak had made too many mistakes which cost us the game 2 weeks ago.

How effective was your game plan against the strategies of the Bears?

On offense, we wanted to play conservatively and keep the ball in our players' hands, and that was going well. We missed some Td opportunities, which hindered us, but we were able to keep the ball safe. Our 2 interceptions that Noah had weren't his fault. One bounced off of a WR's head before getting picked, and the other was a desperation throw that was almost caught.
