The Chicago Bears sit at 4-0 under first-year Head Coach Ben Johnson and second-year Quarterback Caleb Williams, who both look like award candidates. PML is always evolving, and to be the best means constant movement to try and get a leg up on the competition. Here’s what’s been going down in the Windy City the last couple of weeks.
Signed LS Scott Daly
This stupid stupid game literally won’t let you practice or play a game without a rostered long snapper so Scott Daly was re-signed. He’s just riding the bench unless Cole Kmet is injured, though, because Kmet is faster AND actually a better long snapper with no one better in FA. Like what happens when these old long snappers retire? There are 41 right now which means if 10 retire without a new one coming then what? There are 11 long snappers that are 35 or older so here’s to hoping. Anyway, Scott Daly makes a free million dollars, good for him!
Signed RG Layden Robinson
Since the Scott Daly situation was technically week four, I had the moves to sign one more person from free agency. While I initially was looking at LG Netane Muti and his 96 strength, I decided to go with the younger yet more skilled Layden Robinson at RG. I already forgot which practice squad I signed him from, but I checked the website before I signed him and he wasn’t protected and his team hadn’t protected anybody. He won’t start this year and may not even get on the field, but if I can re-sign him, he’ll be here all cycle.
Bears Practice Squad HB Donovan Edwards is Signed by Atlanta
I’m not upset about this necessarily, but always hurts to see young talent be signed away. He was the odd man out when I protected my four guys and I debated protecting him over one of the two tall, fast corners I chose instead, but he is a pretty decent player and obviously just 22 years old. I think this was a smart move for the Falcons to give Bijan a real backup and fresh legs that isn’t slow like Tyler Allgeier. It was never going to be him, but I did actually need to free up a practice squad spot, so that’s the silver lining.
Released REDGE Dominique Robinson
With Daly back on the squad to be a backup long snapper, I needed to cut someone and when I looked at my roster and the dispersion of players it became very easy. It had to be an edge rusher as I had 7 on the roster. I liked Dom Rob as a prospect at Miami of Ohio and even now just based on his build and burst, but I’d rather keep Tanoh as a more versatile veteran and Daniel Hardy has a quicker first step. A very inconsequential move as both him and Hardy rarely see the field, maybe special teams.
Demoted RG Ricky Stromberg to Practice Squad
After signing Layden Robinson, all that was left was to cut down one of my guards. Luckily, both Stromberg and Luke Newman were practice squad eligible to get the roster at 53 players while still retaining the talent with the open spot after Edwards’ departure. The decision was really easy, though, as despite Stromberg being the better player, he’s older and on a one-year rental while Newman is a rookie with four years left. This team is full of unfavorable contracts so I need to prioritize not cutting people with those kind of years left at that price point.
