After a tough start to the season, the New Orleans Saints have shifted their focus—not just on the scoreboard, but on building a foundation that will last throughout the cycle. In a recent Twitch stream, head coach Firefighter Richard laid out his vision for the team’s direction, and it’s one rooted in his own life experiences as both a personal trainer and firefighter.
Health as an Identity
While most coaches in the Premier Madden League emphasize roster moves and draft strategies, Richard is adding another layer: health.
“We want to be a team known for staying on the field,” he explained. “That means keeping the injury list short, managing fatigue better than our opponents, and putting players in a position to succeed physically.”
It’s a natural extension of Richard’s real-life background, where he trains athletes daily and understands the science behind performance and recovery. The Saints are working to mirror that philosophy in their Madden approach, hoping to turn health into a competitive advantage.
Smarter Schemes, Smarter Sheets
Richard also emphasized the importance of tailoring playbooks to fit the team’s true identity, not forcing a style that doesn’t work.
“You’ve got to know who you are,” Richard said. “If you’re fast, you play fast. If you’re physical, you play physical. We’re building play sheets that match our personnel and allow us to sustain drives without wearing ourselves out.”
This renewed focus on efficiency and sustainability aims to minimize mistakes while maximizing the strengths of players like Tyler Shough, Velus Jones Jr., and the returning Alvin Kamara.
Development and the Draft
Richard didn’t shy away from the long game either. Player development and smart drafting remain central pillars. “We’ve got to keep talent in key positions,” he noted. “But we’re also excited to draft well and build guys into stars over time.”
That balance between patience and immediate execution is what the Saints hope will keep them competitive throughout the cycle, even if wins don’t come overnight.
Firefighter Mentality
At the heart of it all is the unique edge Richard brings. Firefighting is about teamwork, preparation, and staying calm under pressure. Personal training is about discipline, consistency, and health. Together, those philosophies are giving the Saints a distinctive identity—one that could separate them in the long grind of the Premier Madden League.
As Richard summed it up: “We may not be the flashiest team every week, but we’ll be one of the hardest to wear down. And that’s how you win in the long run.”
