The Giants off season is officially here and after resigns, the team only went down. A lot of players walked, in fact, Evan Neal was the only player who signed a new contract. 23 players were released, some of which were tried to be resigned but they didn’t like the offer that was sent in to them. Most of the players were backups, however, some lineman were not.
This left the Giants in rough shape, specifically at the offensive line and safety position’s. The cap management was tough as the starting spot was only 9.9 million. After a restructuring of Burns contract, the cap number went to 25 million. To gain some more space lineman Hudson was cut, which took the cap amount to 30 million. This was enough money to go bargain bin shopping.
The first spots to look were lineman and defensive back. Most of the high profile guys wanted to much so we went down the list. A few guys were looked at but eventually passed on due to multiple teams bidding for their services. The final three bids of the first free agency went to RT Jedrick Willis, CB Jack Jones, and C Connor McGovern. These were all chosen as it was positions of need. Jones and McGovern were being sought after by multiple teams. Willis and Jones were signed by the Giants, with McGovern signed by the Chargers.
Willis was brought in as the starting tackle opposite of Andrew Thomas. Willis is a younger guy with 92 strength and good pass blocking. He will need to work on his run blocking, but the Giants are known for more passing so it’s okay. He was signed for 2 years 14 million.
Jones was the steal of this period. He is a 94 speed, 93 acceleration superstar corner who signed for 2 years, 12 million. He is 28 so that’s a down side but the fact that a fast superstar corner was gotten for that little shows what others have missed. He will be used on kickoffs as he has the return man ability and rotated as the slot corner.
This was a successful first free agency period and the Giants will look at bringing more lineman and linebackers in the next period.
