Tommy Mellott: The True Run Pass Option

If the Jaguars needed any proof that signing Tommy Mellott was the right move, the first two preseason games have made it clear that Coach Ke might have found the most versatile weapon in PML.

In his first game taking snaps at quarterback, Mellott looked every bit like the dual threat phenom that lit up Montana State. He went 10 for 18 passing for 111 yards and two touchdowns while adding six rushes for 112 yards on the ground. He was calm in the pocket, explosive when escaping it, and flat out unguardable when the play broke down. Every time Mellott tucked the ball, it felt like a highlight waiting to happen. Coach Ke summed it up after the game by saying, “He’s the definition of a problem. You can’t game plan for that speed and decision making in real time.”

Just when defenses started to adjust, Coach Ke flipped the script. In the second preseason matchup, Mellott was moved to wide receiver and he torched the defense again. This time, he hauled in five catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns, proving he’s just as dangerous catching the ball as he is throwing it. Whether lined up under center, in the slot, or out wide, Mellott made it clear he’s a weapon from anywhere on the field.

That kind of versatility has Coach Ke comparing Mellott’s impact to another freak athlete on the roster, Travis Hunter. “Travis gives us that two way edge on defense and offense. Tommy’s giving us that same flexibility on offense,” Ke said. “He’s got quarterback vision, receiver hands, and running back instincts. He’s the true run pass option.”

The Jaguars offense already features speed and creativity, but Mellott adds something unique

unpredictability. Defenses have to respect his arm, fear his legs, and now account for his ability to line up anywhere. Ke and his staff are reportedly expanding the Tommy Pack to include new RPO looks, jet motions, and even trick plays designed specifically around Mellott’s hybrid skill set.

As the preseason continues, Mellott’s emergence is quickly becoming one of the most talked about stories in Jacksonville. He’s not just another gadget player, he’s redefining what a playmaker looks like in Coach Ke’s system.

“Tommy can do it all,” Ke said. “He’s a quarterback, a receiver, a runner, and a spark. When he’s on the field, anything is possible, and that’s exactly how we like it.”
