Colts Open 2026 Season with Big Win over Reigning AFC South Champs

The Indianapolis Colts started their season with a bang, knocking off the reigning AFC South champions Jacksonville Jaguars 42–32 in a game that immediately set the tone for what could be a special year.

The Jaguars came into Week 1 as heavy favorites. After finishing last season 15–1 and reaching the AFC Championship Game, Jacksonville was riding high — especially after sweeping the Colts last year by double digits in both meetings. But this time, Indianapolis flipped the script completely.

The Colts relied on the same proven formula that’s long been the identity of their franchise: control the clock, run the football, and win the turnover battle. They did all three masterfully — dominating possession for 23 minutes, rushing for 186 yards, and forcing two turnovers while giving up none.

And of course, it all started with their quarterback.

Anthony Richardson Dominates in MVP Form

Anthony Richardson was sensational from start to finish. The third-year signal caller was nearly flawless through the air, going 20-for-27 for 330 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. As always, his legs were just as lethal — he added 13 carries for 133 yards and three rushing touchdowns, accounting for all six of the team’s scores.

If the Colts could script their ideal offensive performance, this was it.

Jonathan Taylor: The Engine that Never Stops

When Jacksonville dared to play man coverage, the Colts were ready. All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor torched the Jaguars’ linebackers and safeties in the passing game, catching 8 passes for 198 yards — including several key chunk plays that flipped field position. His versatility remains unmatched, and pairing his explosiveness with Richardson’s mobility makes this backfield nearly impossible to contain.

Young Weapons Stepping Up

One of the biggest storylines for Indianapolis heading into the season was how their young playmakers would contribute. Tight end Tyler Warren, now in his second year, made a huge impact in the red zone — an area he struggled with last season. Warren hauled in 5 receptions for 69 yards and two touchdowns, providing the kind of reliable target Richardson needed near the goal line.

Rookie receiver Eugene Wilson, fresh off a standout career with the Florida Gators, added 5 catches for 43 yards and his first career touchdown. Coming from a Greeny-led Florida offense, Wilson’s familiarity with the scheme clearly showed. His ability to separate underneath adds another dynamic layer to an already potent offense.

JT Tuimoloau Takes Over on Defense

On the defensive side, second-year edge rusher JT Tuimoloau was everywhere. His stat line says it all: 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, an interception, and 4 quarterback pressures. Beyond the numbers, he was disruptive all game long, constantly collapsing the pocket and forcing Trevor Lawrence into uncomfortable throws. His game-sealing interception in the fourth quarter officially slammed the door shut.

Rookie corner Domani Jackson, the team’s first-round pick, had a busy debut. He recorded 8 tackles, a number that suggests the Jaguars tested him early and often. While he allowed some short completions, he flashed elite recovery speed and nearly snagged his first interception late in the fourth quarter. The flashes are there — it’s just a matter of time before he starts making those plays.

Looking Ahead

The Colts move to 1–0 with a massive divisional victory to start the season. But the road ahead is brutal — by all accounts, Indianapolis faces one of the toughest schedules in league history.

If they’re going to keep pace in the AFC playoff race, the blueprint is clear: run the ball, control the clock, protect the football, and let the defense close it out.

Week 1 was the perfect display of that formula — and if they can bottle that magic, and get lucky like week 1 repeatedly the Colts could be in for something special this year.
