Florida Gators Survive Wild Rain-Soaked Shootout vs. Missouri, 45–38

It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t clean. But it was pure heart.

In a torrential downpour that turned the field into a swamp within The Swamp, the Florida Gators escaped with a 45–38victory over the Missouri Tigers, surviving one of the most chaotic and sloppy games of the PCFB season.

Despite seven dropped passes, four fumbles, and barely 15 minutes of total possession, the Gators somehow found a way to rally behind the steady hand — and legs — of their superstar quarterback DJ Lagway, who added another legendary chapter to his Florida career.

A Nightmare Start in the Rain

The game could not have started worse for Florida.

The Gators’ opening drive ended in a dropped third-down pass, followed by a fumble on the next possession. Missouri capitalized both times, jumping out to a 14–0 lead before Florida’s offense even found its footing.

The rain was relentless. Receivers slipped. Linemen lost traction. The Gators were their own worst enemy — miscommunications, false starts, and muffed exchanges littered the first half. By the middle of the second quarter, frustration was visible across the Florida sideline.

But then, as he’s done so many times before, DJ Lagway took control.

Lagway’s Legendary Response

The reigning Heisman winner reminded everyone why he’s one of the best to ever do it in orange and blue. In conditions that would’ve broken lesser quarterbacks, Lagway delivered a performance that could only be described as heroic.

Lagway finished 26-of-40 for 331 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions, adding 13 carries for 135 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns. He fumbled three times but only lost one — a testament to both his awareness and his sheer will to keep Florida alive.

“Everything that could go wrong went wrong,” Lagway said after the game, his uniform soaked and covered in mud. “But nobody blinked. We just kept fighting.”

One of his defining moments came late in the third quarter, when Florida trailed 31–24. Facing 3rd and 12 on a drenched field, Lagway spun out of a would-be sack, rolled to his left, and fired a 32-yard strike to Aidan Mizell to move the chains. That play sparked a 10-point swing that shifted momentum permanently toward the Gators.

Aidan Mizell’s Breakout Game

While Lagway was the heartbeat, Aidan Mizell was the pulse.

The junior wideout was electric, posting 9 receptions for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns — both coming in critical moments. His first score brought the Gators back within one possession late in the second quarter, and his second, a leaping grab over a Missouri corner in the fourth, gave Florida a lead it would not relinquish.

Mizell’s ability to stay composed despite multiple early drops showcased his maturity. “Coach told me, ‘You’re gonna get another chance,’” Mizell said. “I wasn’t going to let the rain or the mistakes define me.”

Defensive Playmakers Rise Up

Florida’s defense was on the field for nearly 70% of the game, yet they made key stops when it mattered most.

The turning point came when Cormani McClain picked off a Missouri pass early in the third quarter with the Gators trailing by two scores. His interception set up a quick touchdown strike from Lagway to Mizell, igniting the comeback.

The front four — Anthony SmithJohn WalkerMaverick Baranowski, and LJ McCray — each tallied a sack, constantly applying pressure despite the sloppy footing. Their effort in the final quarter forced Missouri into hurried throws and one crucial three-and-out that allowed Florida to burn valuable clock.

Finding a Way to Win

It wasn’t pretty. The Gators lost the turnover battle, the time of possession, and the stat sheet in several key areas. But championship teams find a way — and that’s exactly what Florida did.

“Games like this test your culture,” head coach David Barnes said postgame. “Rain, mistakes, everything going sideways — and our guys still found a way. That’s what championship DNA looks like.”

With the victory, Florida improves to 7–1, keeping their playoff hopes alive and setting up a monumental matchup next week against #1 Georgia.

The Road Ahead

The Gators now enter the toughest stretch of their schedule, facing GeorgiaAuburnSouth Carolina, and archrival Florida State to close out the regular season. Every game from here on out carries playoff implications, and Florida knows it can’t afford another sloppy start.

Still, if this rain-soaked thriller proved anything, it’s that when the lights are bright and the pressure is suffocating, DJ Lagway and the Gators have the heart — and the talent — to weather any storm.

Final: Florida 45, Missouri 38.

Next stop: Jacksonville. Florida vs. Georgia. Florida will have a chance to possibly knock Georgia out of the playoff race and the sec championship race if they can pull off another victory.
