Giants Offense Then (2021) VS Now (2023)

Coach Burn has been rehired by the New York Giants. In his last two seasons as the Giants head coach, he was able to take them to the playoffs so they wanted him back. His Giants of 2021 versus the Giants he has inherited now are very different teams. They have some of the same players as before, however, a lot has changed with this roster. In this article we will take a look at which players are still here, if they are any better than they were, and which players are new at each position. We will start with the offense and finish with the defense in another article.

Quarterback:

Daniel Jones (2021), Daniel Jones (2023)

Jones is still with the team albeit with a huge new contract. He is coming off of his best season so the Giants and Coach Burn expect him to play like one of the best quarterbacks in the league, considering he is being paid like it.

Runningback:

Saquon Barkley (2021), Saquon Barkley (2023)

Barkley was a superstar back then and he is still a superstar now. SInce being drafted he has been the best player on the Giants and this year nothing changes. The offense has always run through him and this year that will remain the same.

Wide Receivers:

Kenny Golladay (2021), Parris Campbell (2023)

Golladay was the main receiver for the Giants, however, he didn’t quite pan out as they would have liked. He was paid a huge salary, that was a huge waste of money. He was a big receiver who was just fast enough to create separation. Campbell, on the other hand, is a speedster who looks to run right past his opponent. He was brought in to compete at a low cost. He will play the wide receiver one position, but that doesn’t mean he will be the number one receiver on the team.

Darius Slayton (2021), Darius Slayton (2023)

Slayton has always been a speedy number 2 or 3 receiver. The Giants have a lot of these types of receivers at the moment. He is one of the fastest on the roster and will look to finally make his claim for the top guy on the roster. Hewill start at the second position but could make him claim for the top spot by season’s end.

Kadarius Toney (2021), Jalin Hyatt (2023)
Toney never worked out for the Giants. He was constantly injured and never lived up to his potential. In his tenure with the GIants he would show spurts of greatness, however, that’s all it would be. Hyatt was drafted to bring a different dimension to the Giants offense. He is known as a speedy down field threat, however, his speed only ended up being 94 speed. While that is pretty high, Hyatt and coach Burn feel like he is much faster than that. Hyatt will be in contention for offensive rookie of the year.

John Ross (2021), Wandale Robinson (2023)

Ross was originally brought in to be that down field threat but just like Toney he didn’t pan out either. He was constantly injured, however, when he was on the field he did make a difference. Robinson was drafted to play in the slot and take pressure off of Jones with a reliable speedy option with good hands. Robinson finds himself on the bottom of the depth chart due to being one of the slowest receivers on the team, combined with his short stature. He will be rotated in and should have a good season as a backup.

Tight End:

Evan Engram (2021), Darren Waller (2023)

Engram was a speed threat who could get open on any route. He had no issues with creating separation and making plays. His issue was the fact that he would often drop the ball in big moments. He was let go and replaced with another speed threat in Darren Waller. Waller is a big time player who will be old reliable for Jones. Coach Burns’ offense loves throwing the ball to the running back and tight end positions. He will see many targets this season.

Offensive Line:

LT: Andrew Thomas (2021), Andrew Thomas(2023)

LG: Kyle Long (2021), Joshua Ezeudu (2023)

C: Nick Gates (2021), John Michael Schmitz (2023)

RG: Will Hernandez (2021), Mark Glowinski (2023)

RT: Nate Solder (2021), Evan Neal (2023)

The only constant on this offensive line is Andrew Thomas. He is their anchor and will continue to be throughout his career. Even though 2021 had 4 different names, the entire line is basically the same. They aren’t good at all and they will need a lot of content dumped into them in order for that to change.

As you can see the Giants have a bunch of different players, however, the offense seems to be eerily similar to that 2021 season. The team is built around getting the ball out quickly to their speedy players. This is what coach Burn will need to do until the offensive line is built up into shape. He will also need to coach up Daniel Jones so he is not making the same mistakes as years past. We will be back with the defense in the next article.
