Transcript: Panthers Head Coach Press Conference

What are your thoughts about the Dolphins going into this week?

Well, the Dolphins are a strong team, no doubt about it. They're coming into this game with a 3-2 record, and they've been performing well on both sides of the ball. Their rushing game is particularly strong, averaging over 200 yards per game. That's something we've got to be prepared for, especially since our defense has had some challenges against the run.

On the defensive side, they've been solid as well. They're allowing fewer points and yards compared to us, and they have a positive turnover difference. That tells me they're good at capitalizing on mistakes, so we've got to be extra careful with ball security.

But look, every game is a new opportunity. We've been working hard in practice, making the necessary adjustments, and I believe we have a game plan that can put us in a position to win. It's going to be a tough battle, but we're up for the challenge.

Can you summarize what it was like playing against the Lions last week?

Last week's game against the Lions was a tough one for us. We ended up losing 13-34, which was a wake-up call in many ways. Our passing game was decent with 266 yards and 2 touchdowns, but we struggled in the rushing department, managing only 52 yards. On the defensive end, we had 2 sacks but couldn't capitalize on turnovers.

The Lions had a strong running game, racking up 142 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. Their defense was also effective, limiting our red zone opportunities and capitalizing on them.

It was a challenging game, but it was also a learning experience for us. We've identified the areas where we need to improve and are working diligently to address those issues in practice. We're looking to bounce back and put up a strong performance in our upcoming game against the Dolphins.

Can you talk about what it’s like to prepare to go against a player like Tyreek Hill?

Preparing for a player like Tyreek Hill is always a unique challenge. He's one of those game-changers who can turn the tide in an instant. His speed and agility make him a constant deep threat, and he's also versatile enough to make plays in the short and intermediate passing game. You can't just assign any defender to him; it often requires a team effort and a well-thought-out strategy to minimize his impact.

We're looking at various coverage schemes and considering double teams or safety help over the top. But even then, Tyreek has the ability to make plays in open space, so tackling fundamentals will be crucial. It's not just about limiting his big plays but also being mindful of how he can move the chains and keep drives alive for his team.

It's a tall order, but these are the challenges you look forward to as a coach. It's an opportunity for our defense to show what they're capable of against one of the best in the league.

What is the status of Hayden Hurst and when is he set to return?

Hayden Hurst is currently out, but the good news is that it's a short-term situation. He's been working closely with our medical staff, and we're optimistic about his progress. We expect him to miss just this week's game against the Dolphins, and if everything goes as planned, he should be back on the field for our next matchup.

Hayden is a key part of our offense, and we're eager to have him back. But in the meantime, we have players who are ready to step up and fill that role. It's a next-man-up mentality, and we're confident in our depth at the tight-end position to get the job done.

What stands out about your opponent's offense?

What really stands out about the Dolphins' offense is their balanced attack. They've been effective both in the air and on the ground, but their rushing game has been particularly impressive. They have the ability to control the clock and dictate the pace of the game, which is something we need to be prepared for.

Their quarterback is also efficient in distributing the ball to multiple targets, making it challenging to focus on just one or two playmakers. They're good at keeping defenses guessing, and they capitalize on mistakes very well, as evidenced by their positive turnover margin.

It's an offense that requires you to be disciplined in your assignments and quick to adjust as the game unfolds. We've been studying their tendencies and are working on strategies to disrupt their rhythm and create opportunities for turnovers.

What stands out about your opponent's defense?

The Dolphins' defense is a well-rounded unit that's been effective in limiting both points and yards. They're particularly strong against the run, which is something we're taking into account as we prepare our game plan. Their front seven is aggressive and does a good job of getting into the backfield, disrupting plays before they can develop.

They also have a knack for creating turnovers, which is evident from their positive turnover difference this season. That tells us we need to be particularly careful with ball security. They're a defense that can change the momentum of a game with a single play, whether it's a key sack or a timely interception.

So, we're focusing on execution and discipline this week. We know we'll need to be at our best to move the ball effectively against this defense. It's a great challenge, but it's also an opportunity for us to show what we're capable of.
