The Giants finally broke their losing streak last week versus the Commanders in a blowout fashion and look to take that momentum into this week versus the Jets. The Battle Of New York is one that both fans love to see. The Giants were the “home” team in this game but in reality the fan bases in the seats were even.
It was a downpour in New York, which seems to be the theme around the league in a lot of games. The Giants offense came into the game with the intention of running the ball and limiting Aaron Rodgers from beating them. The Jets have one of the best rushing offenses in the game, but with the way the Giants defense has been playing the run, they weren’t too concerned.
Jones and the Giants came out strong scoring on their first two possessions, however, the defense just let the Jets drive down the field as well. With about 5 minutes left in the second quarter and the game tied at 13-13, Jones faked a hand off to Barkley, running into multiple defenders, injuring himself in the process. He was deemed to have a hip pointer and his comeback rating was “high” for re injury so Coach Burn put in Taylor at QB.
The Jets would score another touchdown, and Taylor would drive the field to get the Giants a field goal to end the first half at 20-16. After a Jets opening half field goal, Jones would come back into the game down 23-16. This is where everything went downhill for the Giants. Jones was almost perfect when he went out with his injury, he came back almost a different person. Jones would throw a few questionable interceptions, where he was late on the throw and the defender jumped the route. The Jets would get another field goal and end the third quarter 26-16 Jets. Jones would drive down the field early in the fourth quarter and sneak it in for a touchdown.
The defense would do its job on the next Jets possession, stopping them on fourth down. Jones would be set up at midfield only down three with four minutes to go. On second and three, Jones tried to cook up a play at the line of scrimmage, trying to hit Hyatt deep. Hyatt was open at the start of the play as well as Barkley, but Jones missed both windows, throwing late to Barkley right into the jumping arms of Gardner. On the next possession, Cook would run for a 38 yard touchdown, sealing the game for the Jets 33-23. THe Giants had a chance in this game but the late reads cost them in the end. They moved to 2-6 with this loss.
Key Injuries:
QB Daniel Jones – 1 Quarter
Jones going out with an injury was probably the worst thing for them in the game. He was playing extremely well before the injury, but came back a totally different person. He was late on a lot of reads which led to multiple defenders jumping in front of the receiver and intercepting the ball
FS Justin Simmons- 2 Quarters
Simmons going down hurt the Giants run defense. The defense played the run really well and if you take off the last Cook touchdown, they would have held the Jets under 100 yards rushing.
WR Darius Slayton – Out For The Game
Slayton got hurt midway through the game which resulted in some switching wide receiver positions that messed with the team’s focus. A timeout should have been called and adjustments should have been made to the depth chart when he went out.
Key Statistics:
QB Daniel Jones: 17/29 203 Yards, 1 Touchdown, 2 Interceptions, 1 Rushing Touchdown
Jones played well before his injury. His interceptions were the reason the Giants lost the game. You have to make confident reads and he didnt in this game. This was a winnable game but 5 turnovers by a single player isn’t going to work.
HB Saquon Barkley: 10 Rushes 45 Yards
The defense was stacking the box expecting the Giants to run the ball. Barkley was a great decoy, but Jones couldn’t hit the open passes when they were there. Everyone would rather you run into a loaded front versus throwing interceptions. Coach Burn should remember that going forward.
