Transcript: Colts Head Coach Press Conference

How is the team handling the bye week this week?

Ah, the bye week, man. It's like a little breather in the middle of the chaos, ya know? We're takin' it easy, healin' up them bumps and bruises, and doin' some self-checkin'. Coaches are breakin' down what's workin' and what ain't. Players are gettin' some rest but also puttin' in some work on the side. We're gearin' up for the next battle, man, so when that time comes, we're comin' in hot and ready to roll.

Over your career, what makes a team better at not turning the ball over as the season goes along? What kind of things you need to emphasize? How much of it is coaching? How much of it is a mental part? Physical part?

Well, look, cuttin' down them turnovers as the season rolls on, that's a real team effort, ya feel me? Coaching's a big deal, sure. We drill the basics, work on decision-makin', and check out what's goin' on in the film room. But the mental side? That's clutch, man. We're talkin' 'bout teachin' players to stay cool under pressure, makin' smart choices, and keeping that football safe like it's precious cargo. Now, don't forget the physical stuff, too. These dudes gotta be in tip-top shape, got that grip strength, and gotta handle that pigskin like a pro. So, it's a mix, my man. Coaching, mental game, and physical readiness all gotta come together to keep them turnovers in check as the season moves along.

How quickly can you tell if a young player is a football player if he thinks about it because it seems like at the Combine they’re all saying the right thing and it’s the job. How quickly does it take?

Figurin' out if a young player's a real footballer ain't always a quick gig, ya know? That NFL Combine stuff, it's got the numbers, but it don't always show if a dude's got that true football feelin'. Sometimes, you gotta wait it out, watch 'em on the field, see how they react in the heat of the game, and if they really 'get' the sport. It ain't just 'bout sayin' the right junk; it's 'bout showin' it when they're out there grindin'. Takes time, man, ain't no fast track for that kinda eval.

How valuable is the self-scouting process that you go through during the Bye Week? There's the physical piece, but also that component, as well.

Self-scouting, you know, that's a real gem during the Bye Week. It's like takin' a good hard look in the mirror, man. We're checkin' ourselves out on film, seein' what the other teams are seein'. It's valuable as gold, 'cause it helps us find them weak spots and double down on our strengths. Sure, we gotta heal up physically, but that mental game is just as crucial. So, it's a big deal, no doubt. Self-scouting's like fine-tuning the engine before we hit the road again, makin' sure we're firing on all cylinders, man.
