Transcript: Falcons Head Coach Press Conference

Did you scout Maalik Murphy before the draft? If so, what stood out about him?

Oh we did not scout Malik Murphy at all. Given how we only had a second round pick we did not expect him to fall as far as our pick. That being said we had to scout them during the season this is our second time playing him and we got to say he is a very capable quarterback. His effectiveness through the air isn't as good as his effectiveness on the ground. When the ball is in his hands he's proven to be a nuisance. We're hoping that we could contain him and forced him to throw the ball a little bit more. We feel like if we're able to keep him inside the pocket and force him to make a throw. We'll have a good day at the office. That being said it is not an easy thing to do he is a very effective runner. A very smart runner. For somebody so young he makes the right decisions at the right time. It'll be a good challenge to try to keep him in a pocket and force him to make some throws.

How do you see the competition level in the NFC South currently?

To be completely honest. The NFC south runs through one team and one time only and that is the New Orleans Saints. Throw two seasons they've proven that neither the Carolina Panthers, the Atlanta Falcons, nor the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are much of a challenge to them. They have ran the division. But we are hoping that we could potentially dethrone him this season. That being said, it is not an easy task to do. That's why this game this week against the New Orleans Saints could be one of the more important games of the season. It's early in the season but this is our second match up against them. Given that the NFC south is ran through them. It makes this matchup so much more important. We got to tip our cap to the New Orleans Saints and they were effectiveness in division and out of division. The competition level is good though, even though most expect the New Orleans Saints to come out as a division winner.

How is the team’s morale as you approach the game against the Saints?

To be completely honest the team morale has been low in recent weeks. Even though we're sitting here at the rental and at the top of our division. The players have been disheartened by the recent loss to the Buffalo Bills. It also needs to be noted that we traded three big pieces of the team to the Dallas Cowboys for Micah Parsons. That being said, it could be one of the many reasons that the team morale is pretty low. Even though Parsons is a top-tier talent he is also somebody new to the team. We're hoping that a win this week will lift morale.
