I want to ask you about the receiver position in general. How have you seen that position evolve in importance over the years and how does having a player like WR Travis Hunter sort of factor into that perspective?

The wide receiver position has really transformed over the years. There was a time when receivers were just expected to get open and make a play or two, but now, they're seen as essential to an offense’s entire identity. It’s no longer just about speed or catching ability; it’s about versatility, route-running precision, understanding defensive schemes, and even being a factor in the blocking game. In today’s game, a strong receiving corps can completely change the way an opposing defense has to prepare—they force defenses to cover the whole field, to respect the deep ball, and to adapt in real-time. And with a player like Travis Hunter, you get all of that and more.

Hunter is a unique talent, the kind of guy who can do things that make you question what you thought was possible for a receiver. His ability to understand the playbook, run every route crisply, and then turn on the jets after the catch—he’s really the total package. Having him out there is a game-changer for us. He not only draws coverage but also opens up options across the board, which takes the pressure off other players. His presence alone makes defenses think twice, which is exactly what you want. The evolution of this position has demanded players who can do it all, and Travis is a perfect example of what the modern WR can bring to the game. It’s exciting to have someone like him setting the standard.

How do you rank the biggest changes to this team over the off-season by importance? What do you think were the team's best moves? Was there anything you wish you would have done that didn't get to do?

Honestly, our top priority going into the offseason was boosting our receiving corps. Xavier Legette had an outstanding season last year, but near the end, it became clear that teams were doing everything they could to shut him down. We’d see opponents double- and even triple-teaming him at times, which shows you the respect they had for his ability. Despite all of that, he was still in the triple crown discussion for receptions, yards, and touchdowns, which says a lot about his talent and consistency. But we knew that if we didn’t bring in more playmakers, defenses would continue to key in on him, limiting what we could do offensively.

With that in mind, I think our draft was one of our best moves. Adding guys like Travis Hunter, Arian Smith, Bru McCoy, and Moose Muhammad gives us a mix of speed, size, and versatility. Each of these players brings something unique to the table, and they’re all hungry to make an impact. And then, in free agency, bringing in seasoned guys like Kadarius Toney and Keenan Allen was huge for us. Toney gives us that explosive option who can turn a short pass into a big gain, and Keenan, well, he’s the kind of reliable, experienced presence you love to have in your locker room. If there’s one thing I wish we could have done, maybe it would’ve been bolstering our O-line just a bit more, but overall, I feel great about where we ended up. This team’s got weapons all over, and we’re excited to see how it all clicks.

Can you speak to the overall team health?

We’re fortunate right now to be in pretty good shape health-wise. Knock on wood, but we haven’t lost any of our foundational pieces to injury, which is a blessing considering how much these early games can test a roster. Of course, we’ve had a few dings here and there—some younger guys who have been dealing with injuries that’ll likely keep them out until the second half of the season. But we’re not rushing anyone back. It’s more important to let these guys heal fully so they can come back stronger.

For now, we’re keeping them involved as much as possible, making sure they’re part of team meetings and game prep so they understand the system and stay mentally engaged. We want them to know what we’re building here, and that means they’re learning even if they’re not on the field just yet. Overall, it’s been a good situation, but we all know the season is a marathon, not a sprint. Staying healthy will be key, and we’re doing everything we can to make sure that continues.
