This offseason, just like last offseason, we wanted to make a splash given the draft picks that we had and the players we were looking to ship away. We will take a look at each trade that was made and give a little bit more detail on the thought process behind them.
Eagles/Patriots
Eagles Received: LG Cole Strange 77 Overall, Pick 2.8
Patriots Received: WR AJ Brown 95 Overall
I only had 8 mill in cap space and lost out on Dean and Sweat due to it. I knew that I had to do something. This is where Brown came into play, I could either restructure and gain 26 mill cap space or trade him and gain 28 but take on a 16 mill penalty. When the Patriots hit me up for him, I choose the latter. Brown was sent for a high second round pick and a starting guard. Brown was great for this season, but he regressed once this offseason and it was going to only get worse going forward. By trading him, not only do I gain cap space for the rest of the cycle, it gives me the opportunity to use that pick on a cheaper, faster wide receiver.
Eagles/Titans
Eagles Received: CB L’Jarius Sneed
Titans Received: Pick 2.8
When the Titans put a 92 overall, 95 speed corner on the market, I had to come calling and see what he wanted for him. I offered the pick I had just got in 2.8 but he wanted an additional fourth. Due to Sneed being 29 I wasn’t willing to do that, however, the Titans accepted anyway. This was approved and it turned into one of the best trades of the offseason. I essentially traded Brown for Sneed, but it turned the corner room on our team to one of the fastest and best in the league.
Eagles/Raiders
Eagles Received: LE Maxx Crosby 97 OVR
Raiders Received: Pick 1.12, Future 2 Round Pick
I was going to go for a wide receiver with my first round pick. I feel that this is where the team was the most neglected at the moment. After looking at the receivers in the draft, I had 6 I liked and felt that they would fall so I wanted to get a splash player with my first round pick. The first idea was to get DK Metcalf. This would be simple, the pick for DK, however, this was rejected by the trade committee as they wont allow him to be traded. The next option was to go after another high profile guy, and what better than to add to a position of strength. I tried to get Crosby last season, but Codes did not want to trade him in the end. This season was different and after a bit of back and forth we decided on two picks, one current first and one second in the future which was fair value for both. The mindset for this trade would be adding one of the best edge threats in the league to two of the most dominant inside threats. Crosby, Carter, and Davis should be a force to reckon with.
Eagles/Rams
Eagles Received: Pick 2.18, Future 2 round pick
Rams Received: CB Kelee Ringo 80 OVR
With trading my first round pick, I knew that I had to find a way to get at least a second back so I could grab one of those 6 wide receivers I had on my draft board. With Sneed now on the roster, Ringo became expendable. As much as I would have loved to keep him, I had other needs and he was on a contract year with us needing to already sign about 5 other players next season. The first trade for Ringo was 2.18 for him with the Rams. This was denied due to the trade committee saying that more needed to be added due to his speed and age. Fallen didn’t want to add more so I fielded other offers. The next offer that was sent was a trade with the Bears for pick 2.7. This also was denied, saying that it wasn’t enough. I was disappointed as I needed this pick and didn’t want to give up a first next year for a pick this year. Finally, at the last minute Fallen offered a second next year and we sent that off. This one was approved and gave me the leverage I needed going into the draft.
Eagles/Vikings
Eagles Received: Pick 1.32
Vikings Received: Pick 2.18, 3.12
Before the draft I hit up a few teams to see if they would be willing to take 2.18 and 3.12 for their first. Well, as the first round was unfolding, the 6 wide receivers I had on my draft board started to slowly come off. I knew that they would make it to 2.18 so I waited and hit up the Vikings to see if he was still interested. He was and with pick 30, I was able to get one of the ones I wanted. It made it so that all of these trades worked out perfectly. I was able to get a top corner, top defensive end, and the starting wide receiver of the future. In the end, I even assure that I still have my first 4 picks for next year.
Eagles/Cardinals
Eagles Received: Pick 7.27
Cardinals Received: Future 5 Round Pick
In the 7th round I still had two defensive ends on my draft board that I liked. I couldn’t decide between the two and took one. I felt like I had to have the other and offered an outrageous 5th round pick for a player who could be trash. The Cards took up the offer and we were able to get the player who turned out to be not bad.
If I was grading this offseason so far, I would say that in trades it was an A+. I was able to get everything I needed during the draft while adding to positions of strength on the team.
We will go through who we got in Free agency next, followed by a recap of the draft class.
