Giants Draft Recap

As we enter the offseason, the New York Giants had picks 3 and 11 in the first round as well as the rest of their picks. While the Giants were content on sticking with their picks, they were asked if they would like the first overall selection for a mere cost of both their first round picks. The Giants staff contemplated the offer and after realizing that they could draft their player of choice they went with the trade. Coach Burn and company had two selections in mind for this pick, Quarterback Mailk Willis from Liberty or Right End Kayvon Thibodeaux from Oregon.

Can we trust Jones to be the quarterback of the future given this is his last year on contract or do we want to start over with one of the best physical prospects in a long time. This is the question that was asked to every front office member in the Giants organzion. After careful deliberation, it was decided that Jones is going to be Quarterback of the future and the Giants would be going with the best player available. In saying that, the Giants selected Kayvon Thibodeaux in a selection that surprised no one.

Thibodeaux came out of the draft as the best player available and is joining a defensive line that contains two powerful players in Williams and Lawrence. These three will look to wreak havoc upon opposing quarterbacks for the next few years. The rest of the Giants draft was regarded as a success by most. For the rest of the picks we will list this below and make a quick remark about them.

Pick 1-1: Kayvon Thibodeaux

-Best player in the draft by a large margin, and will solidify the right side of the Giants defensive line for the rest of the cycle.

Pick 2-3: Darian Kinnard

-The patchwork of the offensive line didn’t help last season as Jones was one of the top sacked quarterbacks. Kinnard will be moved to take the left tackle spot and will help anchor a line that is full of young players.

Pick 3-6: Kedon Slovis

The backup quarterback position is one of the most important positions on the team as an injury can occur at any moment. Slovis fell down the draft board and the Giants were instantly ready to take him in the third round. He has pinpoint accuracy and will look to be ready at a moment’s notice if Jones goes down.

Pick 3-17: Jerrion Ealy

Ealy like Slovis was another player who fell down the draft board. The Giants ran to hand this pick in as it gives them a powerful 1-2 punch in Barkley and Ealy. When Ealy runs the ball he will be able to run all of the same plays that Barkley can and may even overtake him for third down plays as he has an amazing 78 catching out of the gate.

Pick 4-11: Khalil Shakir

WIth Golladay suspended for the first four games of the season, the Giants needed depth in their receiving core. Shakir was the best wide receiver on their board and is a great fit in this offense. He has speed and is able to catch the ball with ease. He will be used as the fourth wide receiver and will step in if a injury is to occur.

Pick 5-3: Jalen Redmond

Redmond was selected as the Giants only panicked pick of the draft and he isn’t very good. Coach Burn could be heard after the draft yelling at the wasted potential of this selection. Redmond will be buried in the depth chart, and will see a lot of preseason action.

Pick 5-21: Will Putnam

He was picked on the need to secure another offensive lineman, however, just like Redmond he isn’t very good. He will be used as a depth player, who receives a lot of playing time in the preseason.

Pick 6-3: Al Blades Jr

Blades Jr was regarded as one of the fastest corners in the draft and was selected purely on his speed numbers. While he does have 91 speed, this isn’t what the Giants expected when they drafted him. He will be used alot in preseason.

Pick 7-3: Travis Jones

Jones was the last player the Giants had on their draft board and he was a great pick. He will be the future of the defensive tackle position for the Giants. He has a great combination of size, speed, and rushing moves. He will be used in a rotation this season, however will be the starter as of next season.

The Giants hit on all but three of their picks and should have one of the best rookie classes as long as everyone can contribute as expected. Thibodeaux will be the only starter from the group, however, he will be expected to play at a pro bowl level this season. At the end of the season we will take a look back at these rookies and see how their seasons have gone.
