The Miami Dolphins were coming off of a huge divisional victory on the road against the New England Patriots last week and they welcomed another division rival to town this week. The New York Jets are having a very underwhelming season and they are in prime position to select at the top of the draft this spring, but you wouldn’t think that after seeing the way they started this game. The New York Jets held the potent offense of the Dolphins to zero points in the first quarter while putting up 17 of their own. Down 17-0 with 8 minutes to go in the second quarter, coach Fallen had to trust in his veteran quarterback despite throwing multiple interceptions to start the game. Russell Wilson was able to remain poised and march his offense down the field on the next drive. He found Mike Gesicki wide open in the endzone for a touchdown and then Juanyeh Thomas was able to intercept a pass over the middle and take that back for a touchdown. A once 17-0 New York Jets lead turned into a 17-14 lead very quickly. The 14 point swing killed all of the momentum that the Jets had built up and the Miami Dolphins were in the driver’s seat for the rest of this game. The Dolphins ended up scoring 31 unanswered points before the Jets scored again and the Dolphins ended up pulling out a 45-27 victory over the New York Jets.
Russell Wilson had a rocky start but he finished the game completing 19 of his 26 passing attempts and throwing for 248 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. The Miami Dolphins had one of the best rushing games of the season. Salvon Ahmed rushed for 95 yards on 9 carries. Russell Wilson and Myles Gaskin added another 55 yards on the ground on 9 carries. Ahmed started the season off very poorly on the ground but he is pacing for over 1000 yards rushing this season if he can continue carrying the ball this efficiently.
The New York Jets have a lot of rookies playing on their team this season and while some are playing at a high level, Russell Wilson was able to take advantage of their youth at times in this game. Safety Kyle Hamilton and Cornerback Derrick Stingley Jr were regarded as two of the best players at their position in college, but both players were caught sleeping on two deep passes in this game.
Offensive Statline of the Game –
Will Fuller – 9 receptions for 109 yards.
Will Fuller was targeted the most per the coaches request due to a story that should have given him additional attributes, but once the targets started leading to interceptions, Coach Fallen instructed his quarterback to abandon the game plan and get the ball to the open man. Will Fuller’s contract was extended last season but the possibility of him asking for a trade is still very real. Fuller hasn’t been targeted as much as he was last season but he is still on pace for 1000 receiving yards, however, he has requested more balls to come his way in recent weeks, and if it doesn’t continue to happen, Coach Fallen will have a decision to make in the coming weeks.
Defensive Statline of the Game –
Emmanuel Ogbah – 2 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
Emmanuel Ogbah has been relatively quiet this season and the Miami Dolphins were hoping for better production after trading Andrew Van Ginkel to the New Orleans Saints. Ogbah was reverted back to the outside after this move, but until this game, he was experiencing a career low in sacks on the quarterback. The Miami Dolphins have invested a lot into Ogbah, so they are hoping that he develops into a superstar pass rusher and with a few more multiple sack games like this one, he absolutely can be.
