Nef’s PML Power Rankings- Heading Into Week 3

What is this?

Nef’s Power Rankings is a Power Rankings that will be provided weekly for PML members to enjoy! It’s rankings that don’t necessarily go off popular opinion or past results. It’s a fresh new look into power rankings that completely takes the popularity contest and bias out of it!

What is our goal?

Our goal is to provide a better understanding on who is really performing the best within a specific season using nothing but stats!

Who is involved?

Nefarious- Data gathering and inputing weekly.

Z- Weekly summary on the biggest surprises week to week to provide some substance to the Power Rankings and graphic itself.

CB- Weekly graphic to add something pretty to look at!

What stats are involved? Also what matters most?

Our Power Rankings are based into multiple scores. First you have your Record Score which gives you a certain amount of points every week. Making wins and loses weigh heavily week to week. Then you have your Weekly Score which gathers multiple stats based on that week to give you an overall score and performance on a week to week basis. Next you have Streak which takes your recent winning or losing streak to also adjust your ranking week to week. Then you have Team Overall that plays a very small factor when deciding where teams fall weekly. Finally we have our Total Score which is a combination of average Weekly Score, Record Score, Streak and Team Overall.

All of these things matter and factor into the final result but some matter more than others. Based on formulas used in this spreadsheet i can tell you roughly what effects the rankings mostly week to week and what effects them the least.

(From most to least)

Record Score– This is simple and self explanatory. The more you win the higher your score is. Wins and loses both weigh evenly. Wins effect it in a positive manner and loses effect it in a negative manner. For ties both team get half of what a win would get them.

Weekly Score– Recent weekly scores matter the most after record score. Older weeks (combined in 2’s) will effect the Total Score a little less and less as the season goes on. Weekly Scores does have multiple factors in it itself so I’ll break it down in most important to least.

– Record Differential in a win
– Point Differential
– Record Differential in a loss
– Ranking Differential in a win/loss (based on previous weeks total rankings)
– Team Overall Differential in a win/loss (based on team overall going into that weeks game)
– Points For/Points Against (small amount positive points for high scoring teams, and small amount subtracted for bad defenses)

Streak- With every win streak or losing streak you’ll receive a small hit or bump to your Total Score. So even if you lose one after having a big win streak you won’t punished by it in your total score. But the longer the streak is the more effect it can have on your Total Score and ranking.

Team Overall– Team Overall should matter. Especially when building a team is half of the battle. Though it matters it will not have a significant effect on our Power Rankings.

Thats a quick summary of what goes into it week to week. Please DM me (Nefarious) if you have any other questions.

Z’s 5 Biggest Surprises!

1. Browns (2-0): After two huge wins to open the season, including an upset win against the Baltimore Ravens, things are finally looking up in Cleveland. Deshaun Watson finally looks like a QB, Nick Chubb is running how we know only Nick Chubb can, and the duo of Myles Garrett and Travis Hunter look like they’ll be terrorizing offenses all season long. The Browns have a huge matchup this week that will show if they’re the real deal as they host the rival Cincinnati Bengals.

2. Chargers (2-0): Coming off a season in which Justin Herbert was arguably the best quarterback in the league, the Chargers needed to build off that momentum if they wanted to be taken seriously. They did just that, spoiling Patrick Mahomes’ debut with the Jets and dismantling the Texans once again. Heading into week 3 they have a matchup with the 0-2 Denver Broncos, who have come off two heartbreaking losses in back-to-back weeks.

3. San Francisco 49ers (2-0): The 49ers are off to a hot start once again. Edging out a win over the disappointing, but always tough CEO as well as a surprising win over the Indianapolis Colts, the 49ers find themselves in early competition with the Rams for the division. With what should be an easy matchup with the Steelers this week, they should find themselves 3-0 before heading into the first of two Rams weeks.

4. Philadelphia Eagles (2-0): Another surprising addition to the top 10 (coming in at #7) is the Philadelphia Eagles. Coach CB has the Philly faithful optimistic as they’ve gotten off to a 2-0 start with a solid win against the Patriots, and one of the most insane finishes you’ll ever see against the Broncos. This week brings the ultimate test as they host the defending super bowl champion New York Giants. If the Eagles can pull off a win here, they’ll move to 3-0 while simultaneously sending the Giants to an inconceivable 0-3. Will we see the framework for a new King of the East?

5. Washington Commanders (0-2): Coming off a divisional playoff loss to the New York Giants, the Commanders looked to make this their year. Adding Anthony Schwartz and Leonard Fournette to the offense should’ve provided them with a lot more balance and speed. However, a preseason injury to Johnathan Allen has hurt the run defense tremendously, and the Commanders have started off 0-2 with two tough losses to the Lions and Jets. A big divisional matchup against the surging Dallas Cowboys awaits this week. If the Commanders can’t right the ship, they could find themselves in an 0-3 hole early.
