Nef’s PML Power Rankings- Heading Into Week 4

What is this?

Nef’s Power Rankings is a Power Rankings that will be provided weekly for PML members to enjoy! It’s rankings that don’t necessarily go off popular opinion or past results. It’s a fresh new look into power rankings that completely takes the popularity contest and bias out of it!

What is our goal?

Our goal is to provide a better understanding on who is really performing the best within a specific season using nothing but stats!

Who is involved?

Nefarious- Data gathering and inputing weekly.

Z- Weekly summary on the biggest surprises week to week to provide some substance to the Power Rankings and graphic itself.

CB- Weekly graphic to add something pretty to look at!

What stats are involved? Also what matters most?

Our Power Rankings are based into multiple scores. First you have your Record Score which gives you a certain amount of points every week. Making wins and loses weigh heavily week to week. Then you have your Weekly Score which gathers multiple stats based on that week to give you an overall score and performance on a week to week basis. Next you have Streak which takes your recent winning or losing streak to also adjust your ranking week to week. Then you have Team Overall that plays a very small factor when deciding where teams fall weekly. Finally we have our Total Score which is a combination of average Weekly Score, Record Score, Streak and Team Overall.

All of these things matter and factor into the final result but some matter more than others. Based on formulas used in this spreadsheet i can tell you roughly what effects the rankings mostly week to week and what effects them the least.

(From most to least)

Record Score– This is simple and self explanatory. The more you win the higher your score is. Wins and loses both weigh evenly. Wins effect it in a positive manner and loses effect it in a negative manner. For ties both team get half of what a win would get them.

Weekly Score– Recent weekly scores matter the most after record score. Older weeks (combined in 2’s) will effect the Total Score a little less and less as the season goes on. Weekly Scores does have multiple factors in it itself so I’ll break it down in most important to least.

– Record Differential in a win
– Point Differential
– Record Differential in a loss
– Ranking Differential in a win/loss (based on previous weeks total rankings)
– Team Overall Differential in a win/loss (based on team overall going into that weeks game)
– Points For/Points Against (small amount positive points for high scoring teams, and small amount subtracted for bad defenses)

Streak- With every win streak or losing streak you’ll receive a small hit or bump to your Total Score. So even if you lose one after having a big win streak you won’t punished by it in your total score. But the longer the streak is the more effect it can have on your Total Score and ranking.

Team Overall– Team Overall should matter. Especially when building a team is half of the battle. Though it matters it will not have a significant effect on our Power Rankings.

Thats a quick summary of what goes into it week to week. Please DM me (Nefarious) if you have any other questions.

Z’s Island: The 5 Biggest Surprises Heading into Week 4

1. Cleveland Browns (3-0): During the offseason Coach Doc said he was coming. While I was skeptical, especially since the division he found himself in was occupied by two top tier performers in Ke and Cammy, at this point you have no choice but to respect what he’s doing. It’s early but taking the divisional lead after defeating the two divisional champions in a 3-week time span is super impressive. The defense dominated against the Bengals (although the Chase injury made things slightly easier, Skinner is as dangerous a 3rd WR as there is and the Browns defense held strong. DeShaun Watson also finally looked like an NFL QB, and Josh Downs looks like a premier receiver. The Browns’ faithful might finally have something to cheer for.

2. New York Jets (1-2): The Jets were responsible for one of the biggest trades in PML history this past offseason. Reigning MVP Keaton Mitchell, superstar safety Ashtyn Davis, and hot potato QB Trevor Lawrence were traded to the Chiefs in return for the baby GOAT Patrick Mahomes. This should’ve elevated them tremendously as QB play has hampered their cycle thus far. They also made the move to pick up Jahmyr Gibbs from the Ravens in exchange for Breece Hall. Unfortunately, for the New York faithful, the Jets have been extremely lackluster. They lost at home on opening day to the Chargers 46-28 (Mahomes had 4 interceptions and only one touchdown on the day.) They also got their top pushed back by the Baltimore Ravens 50-15. Mahomes boasts a 3 to 7 TD to INT ratio on the season while commanding an offense ranked 21st in ppg (25 ppg), 30th in total yards (275.7 ypg), 22nd in passing (212 ypg) and 29th in rushing (63.7 ypg). Things will have to change fast if the Jets don’t want to finish 4th in the division.

3. Dallas Cowboys (3-0): How Bout Dem’ Cowboys? Jefe will be the first one to tell you how disappointed he is in the way that season 3 ended. After an incredible 9-3 start to the year (incredible because Tyree Jackson was QB1, and he shouldn’t be starting in the Arena Football League, yet alone our virtual gridiron), the Cowboys lost 4 of their last 5, just barely missing the playoffs. Jefe finds himself 3-0 again, with two early marquee wins over the defending super bowl champion New York Giants and a shockingly dominant win over the Washington Commanders. The Cowboys are riding a #1 rushing offense averaging 209 (this is not a typo) yards per game. Talk about making it easy on young rookie QB Mason Garcia. I expect Jerry World to be filled with fans for the rest of the season.

4. Atlanta Falcons (0-3): I want to preface this by saying Greeny is my guy. Despite whatever the meta-articles may have said about him, I believe he is too talented of a coach to have had the lack of success that he has had this year. His team building has been excellent, and he not only has a dangerous defense and secondary, but an offense full of weapons. I believe Desmond Ridder’s inability to perform at a high level as well as late game mistakes have robbed this Falcons team of performing to their true potential. While I’m not quite sure if he can right the ship this late in the cycle, I’m certainly hoping the Falcons Rise Up and at least challenge the Bucs before the cycle ends.

5. Kyler Murray’s Pedestrian Performance: A lot of fuss was made about how terrified the league should be that Kyler is now a Texan. The early season returns, however, have been extremely lackluster. The Texans sit at 1-2 following another dismantling at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts. On the season, Kyler is 57-78 (73% completion percentage is the lone bright spot) with a 7 to 9 touchdown to interception ratio. He also only has 6 carries for 30 yards through 3 weeks. There have been reports (unconfirmed of course) from individuals close to Kyler that have indicated he wishes he was back with Coach Klvff Goosebxry, who knew how to utilize his legs and arm. While there are certainly worse QB statlines through 3 weeks, Drama has placed himself under a microscope due to his boastful nature.

Z’s Happy Hour Bonus

One Thing I like, Heading into Week 4:

How quickly games are being played: Let’s face the facts. We are insane for still playing madden in April. However, I’m happy to say that it seems league interest among members is at an all-time high (this is a great thing btw) and on a week-to-week basis, the league could not be more competitive. This might just be a pipe dream, but perhaps we could look towards advancing early in the future if it’s been 48 hours and all the games are done. While there are things that go on behind the scenes that mandate the 72 hours, I believe that if we can do the 24-hour gauntlet in the playoffs (absolutely hated this), then we may be able to get through the cycle faster overall with 48 hours.

Two Things I Hate, Heading into Week 4 (Two for One Special):

The Texans Training Staff: These guys suck. Their two starting left ends get hurt, so they decide to steal a protected player from another team and can’t release him cause the front office, in the words of their coach “f’ed up the church’s money”. This is a travesty and I want them fined for team mismanagement if it is not fixed soon.

The Bears’ scoreboard staff and camera crew: Someone needs to be fired. The scoreboard was broken the entire game. The only thing we did know is that the Bears were winning by A LOT. Also, midway through the 3rd quarter the Bears camera crew decided it would be the ideal time to try out a variety of camera views, as if the audience tuning in weren’t already disappointed in the competitiveness of the game. We got the Packers’ patented “my career” camera as well as the Panthers’ all-22 view. Let’s make sure this never happens again
